View Full Version : 4.0 + 6Spd Swap - No Start

Having a little issue as I'm finishing up my 4.0 swap:

I believe it's all buttoned up. We took the 3.0 + Auto out, took the 4.0 + 6spd and slid it in. I think everything's hooked back up.

Now - we are using the 404 ECU out of the 3.0, because the 540 donor car was a '95 w/ EWS II. The 404 ECU from the 3.0 will be Ok for a little while, right? I am sourcing a 404 ECU from an E32 740, but I don't have it in hand yet.

With the key in the ignition and turned slightly, I am getting four error messages (all in German).

One is coolant level (needs to be topped up). One is windshield washer fluid (also needs to be topped up).

One is the transmission program error code. We took the Auto tranny computer out. And we have not jumped the pins on the connector to ground that out.

The other error code is something like "Betriebestanleigt". Maybe I have it spelled wrong...

... any idea what that is?

And, the car won't crank. It won't even try to. There is definitely power at the ignition, because the key will light up the cluster if you turn it.

Is the car refusing to crank because of the 3.0 ECU? Or because of the tranny program error?

Any ideas?!?

Thanks!

First, get the OBC back into US language by holding down the button opposite of the odometer. Wait for it to scroll through the languages and select whichever language you want.

here's something out of left field: neutral lockout sensor. Since you removed it with the auto transmission, the car might think it's in gear and won't start.

the relay for start INTERRUPT exists solely to prevent starting unless the vehicle is in park or neutral. 5 speeds use a relay looking jumper plug to hardwire the tow pins together.

on my 92 I removed the relay and connected the two thick black wires that were underneath.

If yours has the same relay... then that should get you working.

BTW if you just permanently connect the wires for 'park' or 'neutral' together it will start... but cruise control should not work. We had a great discussion on bf.c recently about this

http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=868453

came up with a possible solution. Using a brake switch instead of a clutch switch (with the double outputs) to join the wires for neutral together on one pair of leads to permit starting with the clutch in, and using a relay to convert the other normally open to normally closed for the cruise interrupt (or just leaving the cruise patch in place and letting the neutral signal interrupt).

yea if you just unplugged the shifter there will be no cranking, you could however turn the key on and jump the starter, jumping the shifter is simple, there will be a couple wires that need to be crossed and two that need to go through the reverse light switch on the tranny, the rest can just sit there
