The black plastic locknut on the adjustment end of my CC cable has stripped. I've been trying to get another nut for it, but I broke the other plastic end parts when trying to get the damn nut off.

My question is, how is the end of the CC cable removed? Does the cable slug at the end pull through something? I'm baffled...

use the search engine, lots has been written about cruise control cables

Well I finally got it! I went to O'Rielly Auto Parts and bought a DORMAN 42316 grommet from the HELP section. I cut a 1/16 off the top and split the grommet down the side cutting about 3/16 section out (reducing the I.D. of the hole to 5/16). I used a butter knife to work the grommet into the bracket holes. This worked like a charm!

Yes, I've tried the search function. But there's no info on the adjustment end, or how to take all of that apart for replacement. Which is why I asked here. A new cable may be obvious as to how everything goes into/through the hold-down bracket, but I was trying to repair mine as the cable housing was slipping out and holding the throttle open. (Yes, I saw the posts on the BMW "paper clip fix" for this.)

But at this point, I'll need adjuster parts or a new cable altogether. If anyone has one, I'd be happy to take it off your hands!

Thanks again.

It is straight forward. You unscrew the end of the cable sheath end fitting from the rubber holder mounted on the bracket first. Then remove the rubber fitting on the bracket. With the cable sheath out of the hole of the rubber fitting you can remove it quite easily.

I can get the cable out of the bracket. My plastic lock nut has been stripped (circle in the pic below). But the solid end (head) of the cable goes through the throttle plate (arrow, in the pic below) and through a metal "slug" which snaps into that plastic clip. The very end of the cable is shaped like the head of a nail so it won't pull through the slug. Fine.

But once the slug is snapped out of the black plastic clip, how does the aforementioned lock nut get off of the end of the cable? The black clip and slug are still threaded on. It seems that anything behind the end of the cable is permanently attached.

I think I see your problem. You probably have to buy a bowden cable from the dealer. Get it online. I didn't think it that bad. Although the last time I bought one was for my 525. Get it here,

After a visit to the boneyard, I see the problem. It's not a threaded plastic nut that has come loose, it's an entire rubber grommet that busted in half (the "rubber fitting" yaofeng mentioned).

My question now is, is that rubber grommet (goes through the bracket hole(s)) available anywhere or do I have to buy an entire new cable? (And now that my throttle cable has the same cancer, I'll need another grommet for it as well). That's just WRONG! BMW should not only give away the grommets, but install them as well, as this is a MAJOR safety hazard.

Shogun provided a link to the thread that discussed the replacement of the grommets in his reply earlier in this thread.

There was actually a recall on the Throttle and Cruise control cables relating to the grommets becomming fragile and breaking, just look it up on google. I couldn't find any information as to when or it the recall expired and I had already ordered replacement cables so I didn't worry about it.

Thanks to both you and Shogun. Saw the link, read it, loved it. Tried BMA for the grommet, but they don't show it any longer. I've emailed them, but no answer. Yet.

Still looking online, but the dealer didn't mention any TSB for it either.
