don't touch real or quicktime

imho keep away from windows media player since it chats with m$ servers too much for my comfort

use real alternative
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Real_Alternative.htm

there is also quicktime alternative

much faster, less bloated, and stable...

ON the mac and pc I use I use quicktime Pro and Windows media, and on the Mac I also have VLC. plays literally every format, including oddball ones like .flv.

Only problem is you need quiktime installed for itunes. I uninstalled it and Itunes went potty so I had to put it back. Hate the fact that its there...same goes for realplayer. I use VLC and ACDSee which is simple and superb for videos and pics. There also this thing called avipreview that lets you view unfinished avi files but it also does a good job of playing most awkward video files.

Does anyone know where videos on the web are saved while playing? If you watch a vid fro youtube for example does it actually store the video file on the PC that you can copy and paste somewhere else?

BTW that codec site is a superb resource...thanks!

iirc youtube uses some kind of proprietry embedding which means you cant get to the video streams, and what it downloads isnt really intelligble anyway...

Have a hunt around, there's loads of programmes that will rip straight from gootube.

as of when i shut down it was still running fine, i went back and was going to post the thing it replaced my desktop with but after i changed back and closed the display program it disapeared, so **** it

can't really say i've had any problems with windows media player and the only problem with quicktime is it's slow, one thing that makes them run better with one another on a peecee is to let wmp be the main player and just let quicktime do the quicktime only ****, real player though has always been a insufferable piece of useless ****, it's been a year or two since i've tried it and gave it a chance, it's never been quite this bad as it usually just pestered you to update it daily and thrown countless add's at you, this insideous thing id say was just short of a virus, one of the nastyest pieces of spyware i've come across, i had to manually find it and trash it, at first it even locked out the task manager till i started chopping it down to size, a three finger salute would bring up the window but the task manager would be grayed out

Watch out, realplayer leaves loads of tracking and monitoring crap behind in your system startup!

Run MSCONFIG from the run option off the start menu and google for everything that's under the startup tab... it'll have left a 'stats' collector behind in your registry...

after i killed it's ability to respawn adware and spybot finished it off, neither one could totally get it all and after reboot it would reinstall the missing components so it could piss me off with maximum efficiancy

VLC is great, I use it on linux. Its even better on windows since it comes with a set of embedded codecs. So that even if your missing the codec it may still have it like mjpeg. Also plays DVDs. Maybe its just me but everything seems to look better on VLC.

On windows media player classic is my primary player.

I like simple and fast.

you can download youtube videos with a program called VideoDownloader. It saves them as .flv - flash video.
