View Full Version : Getting rowdy with 4" exhaust

Jon K

I did this for 3 reasons - 1) my magnaflow was super annoying with the weird buzz it'd make. 2) The E34 bumper cut out looks stupid with a 3" pipe coming out, it's much too large. 3) I am anticipating a new turbo and so this will server as the back end of what will be a fully 4" exhaust.

Anyway, I am happy with it except for the issue of having a couple leaks at the weld on the car side - today with my impatience I MIG'd the other v-band on the car and I consequently missed a couple spots. I will have to take it out and do it again at a later date. But for now...

Fits the car much better IMHO

Oh great choice! Fits much better. I had the same feeling you did with your 3". It just looked a tad out of place. I'm a fan of the single outlet though.

Lol @ Alan's wheels.

Sorry Jeff that's TIG on the flange - I MIG'd the receiver flange on the car - not as pretty ;)

I am just trying to get that bad ass look - and the sound to back it up - it's honestly a bit ridiculous. I will get a sound clip once I sort he small exhaust leak out.

Ridiculous is a good thing as far as I'm concerned. Ilike my cars to make as little sense as possible. A pretty stock lookin 5er with over 500 HP? sounds right to me

Looks like you need a chrome tip to finish it off... but don't know if that exist... maybe you can modify those stupid buzzer tips to slip over your pipe and mig it to finish out the look.

I would probably cut it at an angle to resemble the stock twin pipes. It would also flow with the shape of the bumper. Excuse the quickie photoshop...

thats some nice tig work there jon, can't wait to hear it, like jeff said tig is an art form, i've just got my level 1 tig certificate and just started level 2 in aluminium after that i'll do both levels in mig coz it's piss easy

If you want the stock look, weld a divider in the middle of the outlet. Or better yet, a crosshair would be interesting.

Loud means flow and flow means... :)

I suppose police may not like the exhaust. But you have to use the car wisely. Ripping through a quaint town is probably not the best idea.

I'm of the stock or "sleeper" train of thought. Your car is VERY clean and stock looking. Why not finish it off and make it stock sounding? No offense, but I absolutely hate loud, obnoxious cars. So do police. I'm sure an uncapped exhaust can't give it THAT much more horsepower.

Maybe you want the attention... in which case, may I kindly suggest...

I don't want the attention in the aspect of I can't already get it - the point is although my car is "clean" it's not exactly something I'd pass off as stock.

Having an open exhaust on a turbocharged car can mean significant horsepower, yes.

Do you have to change the air/fuel ratios with the new exhaust or do they remain the same?

My target AFR is the same, but the actual AFR is a little leaner - had to add fuel in. This is further proof it makes more power.

what sized fuel injectors are you going with on the new motor?

Will probably go with 1000 cc (100#) injectors. I have yet to cross that bridge.

Here is a sound clip of the exahust - you can hear the turbo spool down after the revving.

OMG... sorry, man. I have to disagree with you here. With that exhaust setup, you've just turned a fine, classy European automobile in to the equivalent of an uncapped ford big block. LOL. That sounds ridiculous. Again, sorry... but to each his own, I guess.

Wow. I guess I have to remember I was young once...

Just FYI: I'm no stranger to fabrication or turbos. Back when I was 18 or so (a while ago) I bought the turbo workings out of an SVO mustang and fitted them to my Lowered '81 Ford Courier with the Ford 2.3L. It was fast.

But anyway, yes I do, and that's my point, you're still tooting around town in it.

If you're going to make it a track car, make it one already.

But loud, obnoxious vehicles driven on the street are irritating to people. (think Honda Fartcan)

haha that's really funny. It isn't a car built for praticality. I've heard too many complaining about how small the boot is on a Ferrari and that it get horrendous gas mileage...who cares
NOTE: this is not a personal attack against you wjbell. Its just a general rant

You've seen me driving it in town?

Nitrous, methanol, turbocharged, standalone ecu, minimal sound deadening, urethane bushings everywhere... I don't daily drive this car

when you had just the downpipe for the exhasut and then added the 3" exhaust did you have to adjust the air/fuel ratios then. if so by how much?

sure Jon, Okay I promise you my questioning will stop soon. Did you notice intake mods affect the air/fuel ratios also? I think the only thing you did after the turbo was to put an air filter on.

Thanks for the replies though.

Can't really comment on "intake mods" because the only cars I adjust AFR on are all turbocharged so... yeah, the turbo intake mod changes some stuff :)

Running no filter on a large turbocharger asking about 75% of its flow will increase power, yeah at times having no air filter on the front of a turbocharger will require more fuel. But, it's probably to the tune of 2-4% and only noticeable at high boost.
