View Full Version : My new exhaust

With my upcoming revisions I decided it's only right to redo the exhaust.

I think this setup will give a nice tone that will really compliment the car. I cannot wait to drive it on the highway, there should be no drone what so ever! Very nice burble at idle and smooth tone everywhere else!

That's a subaru STI turbo housing in that pic (not mine). This is going to be a 4.0" straight exhaust all the way back. No muffler no nothing.

3 is probably enough but 4 is better :)

Turbos like as little back pressure as possible.

Wait til you guys see my next turbo :)

yeah, what's the ground clearence like? Jon you naughty boy, I mean with straight pipes, I love the idea, but on a street car, won't it be too loud and attract cops? Are you putting in an exhaust cutout divider?

You'll never bend that **** around enough to go all the way back without some serious bends and more restriction than a smaller pipe with less bends.
Give this pipe back to the schoolbus that it belongs on.

Considering your power level/flow. You would've been better off going with a 3" which slowly graduated up to a 4" if you had to have a 4". But 4" isnt optimum till you're in the 800-1200hp range.

Thats what I am doing in the short run mike - a 3" -> 4" venturi and 4" back as far as possible. However, I am purchasing a PT76GTS on Thursday and will ultimately be looking at as much horsepower as humanly possible. I am going to try and lop off my 3" muffler as its noise is annoying me - I will stick a 4" section on for the meet on Saturday :)

I am not bending anything - I am using mandrel bends. They're equal ID (or extremely close, for practicality) through the bend. There are 4.0" exhausts that go under the rear trailing arms of an E36 - I will be fine ;) It's only 1/2" on either side of my current 3" exhaust and I definitely have that room.

The mandrel bends are great but you'll need more severe angles and that equals restriction. Not mention the potential for things banging around under there with what must be very close clearances.
I think you'll be causing yourself more grief for no improvement in flow.
You seem computer savy. Once you have an idea of all the bends and radiuses required maybe you could simulate the flow.

Good luck whatever you decide.

The most severe bend is a 6" radius 90 degree off the turbo and the same at the bottom of the downpipe. Then it is straight all the way back to the rear subframe with a 45 degree bend to go under the subframe and up to the bumper.

It's fine - trust me

hahaha. Oh, still got your blower kicking around? It needed a rebuild right? I'm not turboing the M50 while I put the S38 together, but am considering a mild amount of boost in the meantime and am looking to rip you off. :p

Dude I would love to sell you it, but I am not sure what needs to be rebuilt. I have it 2nd hand so I have no warranty or anything and I am not sure if the shaft is bent or not but it definitely needs a compressor wheel. Its an ASA unit though, and they didn't want to send me parts - they mandated I send it back to them where they will probably tell me its stolen or some **** and I will never see it again. So, :(.
