i have brought a 94 e34 530i V8 160kw , has cracked/cooked heads on the engine .
engine and trans are out of the car .
have the option on a 4L v8 210Kw from a 93 740i e32 ,
will the trans in the 530i handle the xtra torque/power from the 4L v8 etc .
the trans look to be the same size , but it has a different model number to the 4L v8 one ,

I'm gonna go ahead and say yes. Plenty of people have ran the 4L on a 530 5sp manual ... an automatic can hold the power even better than that.

I say go for it.

over here the 3.0 tranny is a bit smaller in the fact that it's about the size of a normal tranny compared to the gigantic monster that's bolted to the 4.0/4.4, damn thing looks like it's out of a piece of industrial equipment and heavy like it's filled with lead, eh try it with the small tranny and if it goes **** up get a stick and add a 3rd pedal :D http://members.cox.net/wdixon27/burnout.gif

I've HEARD that the manual will be fine but the auto will die in short order.

The following has be done 2 months ago in Germany, switch from 3.0 to 4.0 in an E32.

Changed were (main parts):

engine and electronics, engine wiring looms
trannies
5HP18 = A5S310 is not strong enough, layed out for max. 310 Nm, which a 4.0 already has at 1000 RPM!
In came a 5HP30 = A5S560, layed out for max. 560 Nm
drive shaft (flanges and diameter are different), also the center bearing
differential/final drive
both drive shafts
the complete brake system was layed out for more power
bowden cable from gear selector to tranny
radiator
complete exhaust system (different diameter of pipes, different cats)

The auto tranny can't handle the torque.

The 5-speed manual can. Ask me how I know ;)

hmmm i just looked at the under hood shot again and noticed it has hydro boost brakes, our v8s had a dual diaphragm vacuum booster mounted just behind the left headlight, i guess they thought it had enough linkage all ready, going across the firewall for ya'll wrong side of the car drivers to add another couple feet for a remote-remote booster :D
