View Full Version : 5 speed owners - can you get rubber in second gear ?

The reason I post the question. It feels like there is a lot of drive line slop in my car. Clutch is new, drive shaft is new, guibo is new, halfshafts are rebuilt. The subframe bushings were done just a couple years ago.

I do notice a little thud in the back of the car - getting on and off the car. I remember being able to easily chirp the tires in my e28 535i, kinda tough to do in the e34. Kind of used it as a benchmark for driveline slop.

Any ideas - diff mount ? carrier bolts ?

yes rubber when I turn off the ASC. Check your dogbones most likely toast.

ASC off as usual, 3.15 LSD TMS Chip B&B Triflo, M50, rather significant chirp in second maybe more like a squawk. all this in the dry

Interesting you should mention that, I just noticed the other day that no matter how agressively I drive I can no longer chirp the tires like I could when I got the car two years ago. Sad.

the clutch gets a little weaker and the shitty twin mass flywheel gets more worn out and floppy

What are you carrying in the trunk? The E28 has so little weight over the rear axle it takes nothing to spin the wheels. There's also that total vehicle weight fighting you in the E34 compared to the E28. I have both, though my E34 is only a 525i with 30-ft-lbs of torque less than my E28 535is. Of course tires make a big difference, too. 205/55x16 on the E28 and 235/45x17 on the E34. I don't often try it with the 525i since the clutch feels much weaker than the 535is.

I have to drop the clutch at least a tad for it to chirp, but I'm at 5000 feet so have less effective horsepower. I also have wider tires which adds friction. If there is some grit or wet I can sometimes break them free in first with just the gas pedal.

I have a e28 flywheel setup - so no twin mass ******** to deal with. The dogbones were done maybe a year ago - so they should be fine. Clutch is only 3,000 miles old. Do e34's blow through diff mounts like e24,e28 cars did ?

Anything else back there work itself loose ?

nope, e34 ass ends are about as solid a set up as bmw even built

Second gear? First to second, yes. Standstill from second? Probably not yer question but heck no heh.

Just a quick snap shift - little high on the revs on a 1-2 shift. I think if you tried to do a burnout starting i seconds gear - the only thing smoking is the clutch.

I managed to get rubber on 1-2 and 2-3 shifts on dry pavement twice (no more after that as I don't want to empty my wallet at the parts counter). Of course this is with a single mass E32 flywheel/clutch setup out of a 1/87 735i (same car I got the trans and diff out of), running some skinny beat up Blizzak snow tires.

Never really tried and it's not something I strive for. I prefer to take .1 seconds longer on the 0-60 time to destroying parts. I know it wouldn't necessarily break anything but ... coming from a world of 5sp Subaru, I've learned to take it easy on the transmissions.

I beleive these cars with wide tyres have a serious ammount of grip in the rear.

I wouldn't call it a regular activity - but it certainly is a bit of a gauge of the relative health of the drivetrain.

ha... i have a 525i with the m20 and everyday after school i would pull out and either have the rear wheels spinning or i would chirp em in 2nd... i was untouchable even agahinst the trans am my friend had... nevertheless i was curious as to why i everytime i did it... it clunked, so i took a gander underneath... only to find that the driveshaft had grooves in it from the center carrier bearing being so torn and worn that when i was popping in to 2nd so aggressivly it would torque the driveshaft up... as so i figured, so i replaced the carrier bearing ... but yet it still happenend... so now im replaceing the subframe bushings and prolly the dog bones... i also have replaced the tranny and engine mounts... but i gotta say pulling out in 1st doing 40mph then a squeal into 2nd is quite a adreniline rush for me.. i have 215 60 r 15's, ps. i really hope a sawzall works on my car... im currently working on this... it's 30 F and i wanna get it done

I just got an M50 E34 donar car for a 5 speed swap. The PO had just dumped 2700$ into a complete trans rebuild etc. So yes....It spins for 20 feet with a quick high rev shift. This with 245/50/16's.......It may not do this so well when its mated to the 18x9.5 and 285/40/18's and better SO3 ties that are on my main 5ver.:D

I can get rubber into 2nd and when downshifting to 3rd with 255 rear Pilot Sports all day long.

My rear main keeps spitting oil on the clutch disc. Kinda takes the bite out of the clutch
