On my B-pillar it says GVWR 4575 lbs. Is this the actual weight of the car?

it's a good suggestion. They often leave them on at night in my province, and you can drive onto the scale and see the weight of your car through the window.

My 91 525 weighs between 3500 and 3700 pounds, depending on what online resource I am reading.

That GVWR is not the weight of your car. 4500 lbs is heavy duty pickup truck weight.

No, The "GVWR 4575 lbs" indicates the total weight of the car at maximum capacity with the driver, passengers and cargo.

The GVWR is the max weight your car can legally carry on the road

any other ways of knowing?

You could take the car apart and weigh each piece on a kitchen scale?.... :p

I recommend the 'left on' truck scale as mentioned, if you can find one, it's great fun...

Wouldn't recommend loading 2 ¼ tons in your E34, unless your into that low rider song :D

Visit any scrap metal dealer with a weighbridge - they'll weigh it for you.

wheelbase has no effect on the scale....

But to find out how balanced your car is, weigh it with both axles on the scale and then drive foward and read the rear only weight. Subtract the rear weight from the total weight and you have the front axle weight.

Then it is a simple matter of dividing the front axle weight by the total weight to see what percentage of the total is on the front axle.

Example:

Total weight: 3600 lbs
Rear axle wt: -1600 lbs
Front axle wt: 2000 lbs

2000/3600=56% front, 44% rear weight balance

That is loaded weight. Deduct the max load amount on that same label.

I thin kwhat he meant is that the GVWR is the maximum weight, including the car's weight itself, as well as fluids, passengers, and cargo that it is rated to carry. :D
