Your tranny is done. It should be a 4hp22, and the fatal flaw with these gives the symptoms you are describing. If you google 4hp22 A Clutch Pack, or 4hp22 Rev in park or Neutral you should find out what you're looking for.

that thread will describe the repair. It's pretty straightforward really, you likely only need to have one new set of clutches installed, and a pair of teflon rings.

I've gotten pretty good at pulling these trannies, I can probably have one swapped in two hours at this point. I'd recommend getting a new bellhousing seal, a new torque converter seal, and a new output shaft seal, save the time and effort while you're in there, prevent leaks in the future. When you go to put the new bellhousing seal in, soak it in warm water first, this will let it swell and actually fit, otherwise you'll just tear it. Ask me how I know :) Before you pull the trans, DRAIN THE FLUID! You don't want to pull the bellhousing and get the surprise of a lifetime when you find out how much fluid a 4hp22 will spill on your floor. Ask me how I know.

Pay attention to the order of assembly. You can do some serious damage to hard parts if you don't, and they suck to try and source. Ask me how I know.

yeah i've done quite a bit of tranny swapping with my e30 so it will only take me a few hours to get it off and back on

thanks for the advice, might as well change the seals now, as for when i get around to it... gotta finish my truck first

and yeah for draining the fluid, changed the gasket and filter, and god damn what a mess that made, lol

Member clhorton has been offering a recently rebuilt ZF box in the classsifieds. A trans shop wont give you the time of day for what he's asking.

What, a hundred or so by truck on a pallet.
I'm gonna buy this trans soon even though none of my cars use it.

Supposedly, when I was pricing it out, the clutches are $6 a piece, and the metals are $5 each. There's a bunch, it's something like 200 for the whole tranny, but you only need like 6 of each for the A clutch pack. The Teflon seals cost a bit more, something like $90 for the pair.
