Anybody know if there is an electrical difference between and 89 and a 90?

Swapped a HP422 from one 535 to another, and now the M & E don't work.

Were they both M/E or was one */E/S ?

Btw, how the hell does M work on these boxes? I've never encountered one yet and was wondering how you force it to change in M?

ive never done it but i assume, put in on M, and then move the gear lever as appropriate.

In my experience with E32s I remember the '89 had M on the button and the '90 did not, perhaps the other way around. Not much I know but there was a difference between the two cars. Perhaps just just how these examples were equipped.

I think it's M & A, but the dash shows M & E

I have a 1990 535, I have A & M on the panel, E & M on the dash when I use the switch, and when I pull the shifter down to a lower gear it switches to S.

I've got german alphabet soup.

89's work like this...the switch has 3 positions, up for S, down for E, and toward the rear for S (think sunroof). 90s and up do away with the E because BMW figured everyone wants economy.

For 1989s, if you flick the switch in S, there's a delayed upshift in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gears. there is no upshift to 4th, even if the lever is in D.

For all cars, if you push it to M, the tranny will start off in 1st, 2nd, or 3rd, and no shifting will occur. Yes, you can go from 0-60 in 3rd gear, but your torque converter won't like you very much. Strange enough, if you have it in M in Drive, it will go to 3rd.

Finally, for 1990+, if you leave the lever in Drive, it's the "new" E(conomy).

Hope that helps...I'm drawing my experience from having owned an 89 and 90 535ia.

And how fast are you going at that RPM in 3rd?

With my 95 I have E (economy) which is on by default (or by pushing the button in), S (sport) which is turned on by pushing the button forward, and a Snowflake which is for - you guessed it - icy conditions. In the latter, the car starts in 2nd to reduce any wheel spin.

I'm so sorry, when I first read this thread and responded, I thought it was someone asking what the M and E DO, not for advice on the tranny. I've recently spoken with a performance BMW tuner, and asked for 4hp22 advice. He told me to stick with the stock tranny, don't bother going to manual trans unless I really want it. When I told him I couldn't afford to keep blowing up 4hp22's he explained that they're all the same, from the 3 to the 5 to the 7, even to Jag, Peugot, and everyone else that used them. He further went on to explain that all one needs to do is change the bellhousing and valvebody. Seeing as when you kill a tranny those aren't parts that will die, you can keep buying cheap trannies and swapping them. They're super easy to change too, I can have one out and in in about 2 hours. With time I could very easily cut that to an hour out and in.

Shouldn't be too tough, from what I can recall you can do it in the car.

From underneath, obviously.
