E34: How many fusible links in the car

folks, i'm thinking of re-locating my car battery to the rear seat - right now it's in the engine bay.

i have some questions re: fusible links:
1. how many are there? mine has two fusible links - one in the engine bay (4 terminals) and another (smaller one) in the rear seat (2 terminals); both fuses are rated at 80A - refer attached pictures.

2. is the main starter motor circuit protected by one of the fusible links - if so which one?

additional - what circuits are the 2 fusible links in the E34 (one in the engine bay and one under the rear seat) protecting?

is it true the main starter circuit (not the relay switch part) is not fuse protected at all?

My 525 has two also. I think my 540 does too. Both of them are near the battery in the rear seat. One is right behind it. Another is to the right of the battery wrapped in heat shring wrap. Both of them are 80 amp.

I have not seen a car with a fuse on the starting circuit.

In my E32 one is in the line which goes to the MOTRONIC (e-box), and one in the line which goes to the fuse box under the driver rear seat and then goes to the fuse box in engine room.
That is probably all the same in all models.

folks, i'm trying to understand how the +ve connections are made on E34s and comparing ones where battery is in front vs ones where battery is under the rear seat.

based upon my tracing using a multimeter, the picture below shows the current linkage between the two fusible links in my car.

disregard the dotted diagrams for the proposed battery transfer.

key points:
- black (2) wire goes into the ECU box via bus bar & bypassing fuse_A.
- red (3) goes somewhere under the rear seat
- starter wire goes directly from battery post

based upon current setup, it would seems that my two fusible links are in series - doesn't make sense - why would i need two fuse in series? or is mine wired up all wrong even for current setup with battery in engine bay.

Do you have access to the ETM for your model? You should look it up.

yaofeng, what is ETM - is it some technician/technical manual - i'm not well versed in technical diagrams.

another thing is that my bmw in malaysia is what they called a ckd model ie locally assembled here by the local bmw distributor - i'm not sure if the wiring is the same as overseas model. for example i do know my radiator (even though BEHR) is very different from a UK model.

Do you have access to the ETM for your model? You should look it up.

ETM stands for Electrical Troubleshooting Manual. It has the complete wiring details of your car down to the splice of every wire, although there are mistakes. You should be able to download a copy from the web if you look hard enough. I printed a hard copy for both of my 95's.

If you try such a modification, you have to understand it and that only goes by studying the ETM.
Every aplice of wire is shown there and all connections, and also a component location section with pics.

shogun/yaofeng, thanks for the link and help. i went and download the link provided for the 93 model - after reading it i notice:
1. it doesn't show wiring for a 520i (only 525 & above)
2. when i just compared the fuse/relay box (for 525), it is very different from what i have in my 520i.
3. the power distribution for 525i looks different from mine.

is there a ETM for 520i model?
