Outside Rearview Mirrors

I need to remove the mirror plate itself from the mirror housing on my E36 which is the same design as the late model E34's. I checked Bentley and it looks straightforward to pull the glass off. Has anyone done this successfully without cracking the glass? Any hints would be appreciated.

Grasping the mirror at the bottom in the center, pull the mirror to toward you. You can push at the top of the mirror in the center at the same time. Piece of cake.
