how many miles can one to expect to get out of one of these things. I have seen 200k mile examples on ebay.

I should imagine it all depends on the amount of money you're willing to throw at it.

One of my mates who deals with crashed bimmers for a living says that the 525i drivetrain/auto box is usually good for 400k miles before something majorly gives up. So long as it's well maintained that is.

I'd have thought that the engine would need a rebuild by 250-300k at least.

~80kmi here :)

If they are well taken care of they should be able to go 200k.

Now that the E34 has become more of an enthusiast car, I think we're going to start seeing more and more 200k+ mile cars on the road in nice condition

Mine's a 530, but it's got 226k miles on it and still uses less than a quart of oil between 4000 mile changes. It all depends on how well maintained the car is - like anything else, abuse it and you'll lose it.

I think that garaging the car as much as possible is an imprtant contributor to long life - but that's just my opinion, and I'm lucky enough to have covered parking at work and a gagare at home.

I don't throw huge amounts of money at my car, but I do maintain it with care. I probably spend $1500 a year on average - less than 2 monthly payments on a new car. And, this baby is paid for - has been for years and years.

Highest I have heard of, is this Oxfordgrün in the US, with 280k Miles http://www.dealercarsearch.com/retaildetail.aspx?dealer=132&id=8970&bgColor=000000

Dealer wrote 200k, but when mikegreen looked at it, it had over 280k:D

Nice condition for this high mileage, a good sign for both quality and owners who cares for 540i.

This 1996 Oxfordgrün 540iT/6 in Germany has over 252k miles under the wheels http://autoscout24.de/Details.aspx?id=shskzp3zff2

I'm sure there are higher mileage E34's- it's just that nobody sells that after 200K miles, so who's gonna know? I'll tell ya right now I'm not ever going to sell mine. The repair time and costs tuned to perfection. Only reason to get rid of her is if we nuked the middle east and then I'd happily give her up.

no clue, i think it may of been at least the original replacement block if not the original itself

Closing in on 187k and get complimented all the time about the finish. People can't believe that it's nearly 13 years old, original paint and that many miles.

Yeah, little stuff here and there is starting to break. Lost a window motor on the way back from Chicago, cruise control switch has died, but a little work and she's back on the road again, good as new.

Mine has done 270,000km/s, is immaculate and has had few minor issues.
