I guess I need to rebuild the transmission I have on my E34 as I guess I will keep it. so I will start fixing it starting from the most annoying thing.

I was thinking of getting a rebuild kit and do the rebuild. anyone did that before or have access to any write ups on the net with pics?

Thanks

Maybe I missed something. Whats wrong with the tranny? Any reason why you wouldn't consider swappping in a good used one?

Just wondering

good question, first my 5th speed doesn't click in without matching the wheels speed with the gear speed, otherwise it will kick back to neutral. I took it to many techs all of them agreed on that the tranny requires rebuilding. swapping it is way harder cuz I had hard time finding this tranny before it failed, so I don't think I would find one other, still if I can find a 6 speed M5 tranny it would be awesome, as it will save me replacing the rear diff. from 3.91 to 3.45 or 3.64 that matches the 5-speed drive ratio.

since I have my E31 around (after I fix the crashed front of it) I will remove the tranny off the E34 and fix it.

What gearbox do you have. Let us know as I've seen folks on this board pull some pretty rare $hit out there buts. You never know.

sounds like 5th gear synchronizer is toasted, replace all the syncos while in there and a new gasket kit and you should be good.

that's a good place to start ... where can I get the sync. kit?

ZF ... there are 2 types, the E28 type and the E34, mine is the E34 newer one. I guess it's the 2600130291

If it's popping out of gear I think that is an indication of worn mainshaft bearings. Make sure the case isn't toast before spending $$ on parts.

ZF ... there are 2 types, the E28 type and the E34, mine is the E34 newer one. I guess it's the 2600130291ZF manuals in e34s? I thought they were all getrags, e28/32/34. Cool. Do post some pics when you pull it so we can all see!!

well all other speeds run cool, only the 5th, I need to adapt the RPM with the speed then it fits in and run on the 5th, but if I shift it like it supposed to be it kicks out once I step off the clutch.

case looks fine from outside, no smell or other symptoms.

isn't there any manuals for assembly and disassembly?

thanks

I don't know of any and members here have had sketchy experience with rebuilds (Vines?).
For some reason the Germans seem to feel transmissions cannot be properly repaired in the field so offer little or no parts or service info. Another German brand I own is the same way and offers only a complete gearbox at uber high $$$.
Hopefully someone here will prove me wrong and get you some help.
Sorry to hear about wrecking the 8. I hear they are tough to repair.

well I will find about the tranny thingy really soon, in Lebanon they do repair them really often, they love manual cars. they also sell refurbished traanies for around 650$

about my 850, it's hard to fix cuz you cant find body parts easy. but I managed to get the fiber bumper and I only need the signal lights and the high beam projectors.

wish me luck :)

thanks dude ..

Sorry for the o/t

ZF manuals in e34s? I thought they were all getrags, e28/32/34. Cool. Do post some pics when you pull it so we can all see!!
no m50s have ZF's as well, at least in the early non-vanos (mine has a ZF).
I always found 5th a bit stiff, luckily due to the high inertia flywheel on my m50 it is easy to double clutch on the way from 4th to 5th and she schlips right in :p

it does bolt right away, the rear drive should be 3.91, same as the Japanese specs 535i auto. rear differential drive. if u bolt a 5 speed tranny u need a 3.64 diff. or the car will run seriously heavy.
