That's not a crystal ball ;-) - it's the dome of your tweeter. The coil of the tweeter is just underneath the dome (you can see the copper wires on each side). Looks like there's a crack in the tweeter dome (or is it just a trick of the light?). The tweeter dome is probably made of mylar - also known as polyester.

ooooh A/D/S nice.

What years did BMW incorporate this kind of speaker?

I've got two pairs of awesome KEF speakers I'd love to incorporate into the system somehow. Uni-Q 160 Q 6" and 690-Q 6X9's each has a separate x-over. These blew everything else on the market away ten years ago when they went off the market... But the stock system sounds so good i never really needed to touch it.

I have a pair of KEF Reference 103.2 (http://chrissetlock.com/KEF.aspx) home speakers. Arguably one of the best speakers made for stereophile audio.

I am currently tracking A/D/S and MacIntosh in addition to KEF drivers for my e34. I see there is a vintage NIB (new-in-box) competition subwoofer on eBait for $225.

I have a pair of PPI 6x9 and a pair of 4x6 both coax, both amazing. Too bad I can only probably use the 4x6's in the rear deck, no use for the 6x9's. I have a garage full of car stereo and home audio ready for the auction block so I can make room for the car.
There is a pair of A/D/S L810's with the metal grills out there somewhere, a pair of old school Technics monsters, rare Spica's and Tannoy, and probably 10 pairs of Klipsch speakers from over the years, not to mention the vintage Yamaha and Pioneer and Harmon Kardon audio gear. Turntables? Don't get me started... LOL.

Not bad...

One day I'm going to make a pair of these:http://www.linkwitzlab.com/

Yup that's right, they're designed by Mr Linkwitz, who put the Linkwitz into Linkwitz-Riley crossovers. In other words, he's an audio god.
