hmm... I think I notice CEL on the 2nd pic. The post looks too neat to be a private party. Will give the poster a call for more details.

Don't think the CEL is a problem, the tach is at zero so i think they key is in II but the engine is off.

Yah, its a shame you can't change wheels.. lol. I think most people downplay the nikasil engine problem issue now as these cars are mostly up in the mileage range but i read a thread on some forum or other of a kid who bought one, never heard of the engine issue ,it croaked and the dealer was unwilling to do anything. Now he's got a nice dead carcass or faces about $10K bill more than he paid for the whole car. I'd get the VIN and check with BMW.

$10K bill? Can't he just buy a part car (automatic) for about 4-5 K. My car had records for the Alusil block. I think the parts were about $2500.

Sure if he had the wherewithall to do the work himself. half the bill is the labour .Not everyone can swap and engine themselves... You;re atlking invoice on the short block. They dealer wouldn't do it under warranty so they'd charge full boat for it. maybe the price was exagtterated but still if the dealer wasn't swapping the short block he may as well buy an alusil m60 and have it installed which would still surely be up around $6K parts and labour etc. No? The few alusil m60's i've seen on ebay were around $4,000 i think with near 100K . Add $100/hr labour for the R &R... maybe swapping a whole engine is easier than swapping heads and pistons etc but still its more than a ten hr job isn't it ? The minutia notwithstanding he got screwed over by not checking into it. I was as much of a newb as anyone and i was able to research and learn about this issue . Doesn't take much to call a BMW dealership or BMWUSA with the VIN and ask. Living on the east coast as i do i wouldn't buy an Nik M60 for anything.

i bought a nikasil M60 with 170K miles and it's been a great ride..... up and down the east coast six times so far

the vin will only tell you if it was replaced at "the dealer". the only real way to tell is crawel under it and note the numbers.

Yah, they could have been lying. Check the block stamp if they tell you they have no record of it being done. maybe he bought an engine on ebay and dropped it in himself. Either way I'd avoid the Nik,
