$34.64 for my '95 which is a more expensive key than in '89.
Hardware store ought to be able to do yours. Dealer must have misunderstood and qouted for a newer car.

I just had two coded keys for my 94 525iT made and the price was 41 each, being your 89 is non coded, I think your dealer is smoking crack!

They're charging you $65 because you're buying a key with the light insert.

The insert itself is $25. The key is another $25 (wholesale). So their retail price is about the norm.

Tell them you want the plain key, nothing fancy.

Oh, and by the way, most of these OBDII keys with transmitters are $100+, BMW or not.

You can also do what I did.. buy a key blank on ebay:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/BMW-Lighted-Key-Blank-E31-E32-E34-E36-325-525-735-9981_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ40016QQihZ019QQite mZ290106475497QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW
$25.95 + $3.30 shipping

I also bought a new lighted insert to replace the one on my original key:

I've yet to get a chance to find a local locksmith to cut my blank key for me.. since the dealer won't do it. But that's the way to go IMHO.

I bought the items from the seller in the above links.. In case you're looking at this way in the future after these auctions have been deleted - the seller's store is: http://stores.ebay.com/SoCalMotorsport

Well, BMA sells ignition locks with and without pre-matched keys. You give them the number and they sell you a matching lock so your old key still fits the new ignition and the doors, etc..

So, shouldn't BMA be able to get you a new pre-cut replacement key if you provide the numbers, for one hell of a lot less money than discussed in this thread?

I think you could buy a complete E34 in the UK for that.

A couple months ago we paid $75 for a coded key w/chip & light (master key) for our 95 525iT. I thought it was pricey but it certainly beats $300! I think I paid $35 for a master key for my 535i a couple years ago.
