You really have to remove the steering wheel/airbag just to remove the inst.clust?

if you've got the slightly smaller 3spoke or M-Tech wheel it is possible to wriggle it out. patients!..

If Jeff's car has an adjustable steering column...and it should...the cluster comes out by moving the column all the way towards the driver's seat, undoing the cluster's harness connections and rotating it left with the steering wheel. No need to mess with the airbag or steering wheel. But disco the battery.

Be careful as I scuffed the bezel doing it this way.

of new bulbs and do em all, or you'll be back next week.

it's 3x 3watt guage illumination

6x 1.5 watt bulbs for LCd illumination

13x 1.2 watt bulbs idiot lights.

Drive on over to my place and we can have a few beers and get 'er done.

There were 2 styles. The change was in 09/1990. Bill's was for a 1990 525i m20 and looks to be the earlier style. I think differences are subtle. The newer one has a light blue plastic back. All e34's/e32's use the same cluster, with the noted year change, according to www.realoem.com

You should be able to do it even without taking the steering wheel off (I did).

And yeah, replace all the bulbs.

No need to remove the steering wheel. I did mine yesterday. 89 535. remove the lower dash trim panel under the wheel(7 screws), 4 bolts for the "sound deadening panel under that, and 2 bolts holding the steering colum up. After that 2 screws on the cluster and pull out to release the 4 wiring connectore. Out , bulbes changed, and reinstalled in about 15 minutes 30 if it is your first time.

It's far easier to just remove the steering wheel... I've had the wheel off twice now, once for cluster lights, and once for another unrelated issue, it's not bad at all... Just disconnect the battery for 10-15 minutes before you start...
