I replaced the brake switch as a preventative maintenance item along with the throttle position sensor this weekend and have a new brake light circuit warming light. I have had this in the past and it has self-resolved. This time it is being quite persistent.
I replaced the switch with an OEM but not dealer part (from Auto AZ) and I suspect that perhaps the switch is perhaps a bit off-spec. The old switch was destroyed on removal so I cannot test against the original.
The brake lights all work and the cruise functions properly as well.

Has anyone had similar experience with a non-BMW switch here?

no expierence with non bm part but double check all your bulbs - give all the terminals a good clean ,these systems work on very fine tolerances of restiance

For the archives: The BMW part fixed it. The febi switch was either bad or not fully up to spec.
