I've got the Harbor Freight special but it's not such a great tool... haven't been able to make it compress enough yet.

Any recommendations on a good spring compressor type or brand for an M30?

Thanks!!

Sears sells one similar to the Snap On/Ebay link above for like $25. I've got one that looks just like that, made by KD I think- works fine on all SOHC BMW heads I've used it on.

Bret.

EDIT: searched sears.com and found these:

This is the one I have- bought it used for like $30.

This is the cheaper one I mentioned- should work fine for occasional use.

I have this one from Germany for the M70 engine for example
http://werkzeug-tools.com/catalog/images/k_1781.jpg

http://xxl-automotive.de/index.php?page=product&product=2797&cat=#
Ventilfeder - Spanner/Spannapparat für OHV-Ventilfedern
Art.: s1781 Ventilfeder - Spanner/Spannapparat für OHV-Ventilfedern
Länge 320mm

translation: valve spring compressor for OHV springs.
Length 320 mm

I still have 5 on stock in Japan, as I bought 10 sets from Germany.

Works the same principle as the Midlock tool here

I have a Draper thats designed for recessed valves like the M50. Main things I like about it are that you can unlock either end and it has nice big 'windows' you can get your fingers through to get at the collets! Speaking of collets, hope you freed them off with a good whack or you are going to bend any compressor you use. Or smack your knuckles if/when they do give:D. Dont wish to teach my grandmother etc but a little bit of grease holds them in place when you reassemble.

Edit: Link for Draper valve spring compressor:

note that some of your posted spring compressors are for the springs on the shocks, not for the engine, like this one

Hey I found this awesome serie on youtube. Valve grinding. He shows that spring compressor you are talking about

http://fr.youtube.com/watch?v=iOUwSFypI8I

by the way, valve guides in BMW engine aren't part of the cylinder head right? so we don't have to do the Knurling of the Guides (as shown here http://fr.youtube.com/watch?v=ILzRtdv02gE&feature=related)

right?

I bought one of those and it didn't fit well, and I felt wouldn't be worth my time to use. I want to find one of those large ones.. makes things go much faster and its much easier to use.
