View Full Version : What part of my stereo died?

Quick recap:

1993 525iM w/ all stock stereo equip including cd changer.

Driving along today and suddenly the volume goes up and down and then the sound starts cutting in and out. Goes from left channel to right channel on and off and then dies. Randomly works now but will do the same thing after a minute or two.

Think its the head unit or the amp?

spray contact cleaner onto the volume control shaft (remove knob) and work it min to max multiple times. repaat 2 or 3 times. Volume off of course. This might help. I had a channel drop out and sctatchy sounds when adjusting volume. Good luck.

Tried cleaning the contacts, still keeps cutting in and out regardless of whether I am doing anything like changing the volume.

Time to start getting parts...
