Help!! Loose clutch

I have a 525i, 1995, 165K miles. It ran file until yesterday. Today I noticed that the clutch was extremely loose, it will like I need not depress it at all!!! The gears shifted fine, but the loose clutch worries me.

Can you advise me what could be wrong and how to go about fixing it?
