Hi all,

New to the forum, just picked up a '90 535i with 102k, great shape. Seems the cruise control doesn't work, is there a checklist for troubleshooting? Also, is there supposed to be a gear indicator on the instrument cluster? I think I may have an issue there as well.

Best,

Tony

Start with testing the cruise switch.
There should be a gear indicator in the dash. Lower right beside the big led display. It should show 2 alpha numerics (ED,ER, S3 so on).
Does your big LED dash display in the middle work?
Can you see ghost letters in the sun? If so the bulbs are burnt out.

You should put your car's info into your profile.

Looks like you called the bulb issue, I can see the display change if I use a flashlight on it.

How would I go about checking the cruise switch?

I recently posted details on how to repair the cruise control, together with a useful web link. In my case the problem was the cruise control actuator, not the switch. To find the post, do a search for posts by me with the words "cruise control" and you should be able to find it.

check for continuity at different points when operating the stalk. I dont have a pinout for you. Bentley might have the pins listed or someone might have posted it elsewhere (search!).

I found a problem, if not the problem - the throttle cable from the actuator is broken!
