If you have Part Numbers, I will love you forever.

My VANOS went out.

I need:
Vanos unit
Valve cover gasket
Six spark plugs

I'm sure I'll need more. One guy told me to replace everything up to the actual camshaft...what are these parts? Thanks!

I'm on RealOEM right now, but having trouble deciphering what is necessary for the job.

I'm wondering if it's safe to just replace the VANOS unit, or if I should go ahead and replace some sprockets and tensioners, do I need some washers and assorted bolts, etc.

I'll still give you some love for bothering to reply. ;)

This page, what do I need off of here?

Also, still need the P/N for the valve cover gasket. Spark plugs would be easy to order from BMW, since with my car down, I can't get to a parts shop.

And I get parts from BMW at wholesale. :)

woohoo!!:D

if i were you, i would just replace the whole vanos unit. If you choose to replace certain parts, the older parts in there that haven't broken already are bound to break sooner or later
just my 2 cents

EDIT: just saw ur other post
give me a sec

Apparently I need the VANOS unit,
some sort of gasket 840 1 35 1 740840 (??)

2 brackets
11 36 14 36 071

it depends on what is broken in the vanos. Whatever those parts are, you need to replace those. Do you know what they are???

and yes, i too get bmw parts for wholesale. My uncle is an authorized bmw repairman

EDIT:
dangit, everytime i try to reply, you say something in the middle that makes me look like a moron lol :D

What I'm not clear on is what is included in the replacement VANOS unit.

I need the part number of the VANOS until, but I've been told that I'll need that gasket and two brackets.

Does a new VANOS unit include a new solenoid? Surely I'll need one of those.

Thanks for the help, this is driving me nuts!

Correct.

Anything else you see on that page that I'll need?

I'm also trying to find the valve cover gasket and spark plugs...can't find where to search for that.

Thanks!

this is usally the source of most of the problems.

There is also a fix for a noisy Vanos. washers and springs..you'll need to search, cause it's buried in an old thread somewhere.

that seems about right
but as blitzgreig bob said #4 is probably a good idea too:D

as for the spark plugs, they are standard bosch plugs that have to number...
(ok im actually going to get up and walk out of the house and into the garage to find the spark plugs boxes that i recently replaced my 525i with soo u better be greatful:D )

they are number: 4417

what the 4417 model is the bosch platinum +4 spark plugs

again you can pick them up at your local car shop
or order them online

The o-ring, eh? I'll do it.

Should I replace items 1-12? I don't want to, but should I? I just don't want to pay/do the labor again.

Thanks Bob!

#1 looks like the whole deal 1 thru 6

#11 is all you need for the fittings, and if the line is still good keep it.

Thanks Bob.

My diagram comprehension is terrible! I do see that #1 is #1-#6. I'll order 4 or #11 as well. :)

Before you pay and leave the shop.

you don't want duplicates, or be missing something when your in deep.

good luck

Yeah, I'm nervous about this and the fact that the shop is a VW-specific shop.

The BMW shop won't let me bring my own parts. :(
