When I removed the rear seat to change batteries today I was surprised to see that our Touring is equipped with the factory remote locking system. We've only had the car a few weeks but the p/o who bought it from BMW in 98 w/24k said it didn't have it. Since he only got the master & plastic key with the car I believed him and never looked. Seems odd that BMW didn't mention that feature or supply the remotes when he bought it.

So do I just order new remotes from a dealer & I'm good to go? How do you program them for your car?

Mine is in the same spot, kind of velcroed on top of the relay/fuse box on the left side under the rear seat.

Thanks for the link! The parts guy at my local BMW dealer that I just spoke with wanted $120+ for each remote & said I had to bring the car in to have their service dept program the remote to my car!

What's really involved in the programing?

Instruction will come with the FOB.. Take 10 minutes tops..

Reprogramming the Alarm : So on the E34 web there is the following directions:

1. Remove the rear seat bottom section. You will see an alpine alarm box located on the driver side.
2. Remove the two Phillips head screws that hold the box over and you will see an access door.
3. Open the door carefully: you will see a small black button and a small slot where the remote chip (eprom) is placed.
4. Remove the 2 Phillips head screws from your remote fob. You will see a small circuit board, a battery and a chip.( MAY or May not be there) This looks like a very small ram chip on a PC. Place new chip into the empty chip slot on the alpine alarm box.
5. Put your key in the ignition and turn it to the 1st accessory position (Do not start the car). Go back to the alpine alarm box and hold the black button down for 10 seconds. Remove your key from the ignition.
6. Test.. if good remove chip.
6. Re-mount the alarm box and seat bottom. This is it.

it depends which unit is in the car, the early style you need matching chips for the remotes and one for the unit, the late style you just need remotes with whatever chip in them and you flash the unit with the chip from the remote, theres a hatch on the bottom of the unit with a slot for a chip inside, if it has a chip in it and theres no button inside the opening you need matching chips for everything, slot with no chip and a button then you can score remotes from ebay and use whatever chip thats in them, ones that look like this (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/BMW-Keyless-Entry-Alarm-Remote-FOB-Alpine-92-95_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33723QQihZ017QQitemZ 270087493509QQrdZ1) and ones that looke like that with one button will work

I purchansed a remote module from a 93 525. I found the plug on the passgenger side of my 91 535 and plugged it in and it works fine. My wifes 525 came with the module and I ordered the FOB from keyless. So I jst ordered the same for my 535..

I have that whole alarm setup that I bought on tha bay, but alas, no wiring harness by the battery to plug into. I think because I have a euro spec 530 with a sept 92 build date that I need to tap in somewhere under the steering column, much like you would an early e32.

at some point I will sell the whole shbang. If only I had that 14pin green female plug under the seat......

Here's a pic of what mind looks like with the panel removed. No black button so what years constitute old & new? This one can't be any older then 6/95. What do I need to get this working?

that's the late one with the button, it's the little black thing that looks like it says S502 under it, and the CB501 is where you plug in the chip from your remote to program the unit with it's code, the instructions on e34.net work, you take the chip from the remote and plug it into that slot, i can't remember the exact sequence of key on and button pushing but i think it will accept 3 differently coded remotes, had 2 different ones i scored outta junk cars on my 535

Anybody know where to get replacement remotes for reasonable price?

$100 each is just too much.

I have 1 KIA, and 1 that is about to be KIA.

You can get complete aftermarket set ups for under $200 or try to find a used box from the salvage yards.
