will a e36 325 muffler fit a e34 525?

I know an E34 535 muffler will fit a 525. I had to replace the muffler on mine... I don't remember where we bought the new one, but a note came with it that said that due to the complaints about the factory 525 muffler being loud (it was supposed to have a sporty growl) they have decided to use the 535 casing in place of the 525 casing, which does in fact make it VERY quiet. Now all I hear is the tickety-tackety of the lifters.

So does it stand to reason then that an OE 525 muffler on my 535 will bolt right up and give it a "throaty growl?" My muffler is all rusted through and back again and I need it replaced; this intrigues me.

Don't do it. The throaty growl gets to be annoying after awhile. Passengers (wife) think something is wrong with the car.

Because the company purposefully used the 535 casing, I am guessing that this means they adapted the tubing for the 525 to the 535 casing. In my case it is 1.75" tubing on both lengths. Did the 535 also use 1.75" exhaust tubing? Because if it didn't, you'd be creating a restriction by adding a 525 muffler. In the case that the tubing is the same size, the 525 muffler would make a 535 alot louder than factory because the casing is smaller and uses less packing.
