Yesterday, I got the message 'low head beam bulb' and sure enough, it's out. Now, which kind of bulb do I need? Can this only be from the dealership or I can order it online somewhere?

For stock replacement bulb, any 9006 bulb will work.

I take it this is for the E39? You have xenons? Swap the ballasts to see if the suspect bulb fires, if it does, go shopping for a ballast. You should be able to find one on Ebay for $100...

uhhh? ballasts?! Yes. this is for E39 - regular bulb. Is it the H7 - 9006?

It's the H7 if you don't have xenons.
