Dear All,

Was on my way into town today (via the motorway) and took this picture.

Damn....imagine if I'd had a blow-out?

...and yes, I did buy some petrol whilst in town, the lowest I've had the gauge to is "---" which is pretty damn low...

Would this be a reasonably accurate reading? I have an M5 3.91 diff which might mean its not....

What have you had outta your beast?

Kind regards

Damn, yeah yeah I know I know - Thank GOD I have only once run outta gas - AND it was in a Mini (so not too bad to push) - I don't fancy pushing the bimmer on my own....

140 is not bad, when I got this car I had a race with my mate (who had taken me to pick it up) - he has a 2006 Subaru Impreza 2.5 Turbo - he thought "yeah I'll kick yo' ass" - unfortunately - his car is limited to 141mph - at 150 - I was pulling away!!! - man was he pissed - especially as his car cost like £30,000 and the Zimmer cost less than a grand!

Most people freak out at more than 130 - thank GOD my missus wasn't in the car with me.....

With 3.91 gears and 225/60 x 15"tires I figure 6400rpm ~ 125mph
Having attended (infrequently) public school I stand to be corrected though.
An M30 powered E32 of long ago once attained an indicated 155 mph, and promptly required a reseal job as the crankcase pressure became excessive at the sustained high revs.

you can call it the moral patrol if you want, but I hit a wall at 110 mph in December, and I am lucky to be alive. I can't imagine 160.

I'm also lucky that I didn't kill anyone else.

Yes, I agree, someone I know killed his 18 year old passenger yesterday. He's now going down for 10 years 'cos he was pissed at the time.

You guys obviously don't know French Motorways at 7am.......empty.......

I guess the problem I have with this is that the car you're driving at gloriously high speeds is 18 years old. At that age, no matter how good you are, you're more likely to have car error than user error.

Flamin'Cow
01-29-2007, 12:21 PM
aaahhhh yes, but which is better -

a 'new' car - never serviced and owned by a non-car enthustaist...

or an 'old' car which has a FULL service (OIL, Oil filter, fuel filter, plugs, leads, belts, fluids, gaps) every 3000 miles (sometimes less), runs on (only) 98RON fuel, has the BEST tyres, shocks, bushes etc etc etc etc etc (and brakes)? (EBC disks & pads).....?

You decide....

Or speedo error. I just can't imagine the old M30 having the suds to propel the car along quite this briskly. Unless those deserted French motorways are downhill.

Flamin'Cow
01-29-2007, 01:50 PM
No, this is REAL, no problems with the car afterwards either (at least I hope not)... although i guess having the MPG needle 'off the chart' for extended periods of time ain't too good for the motor....

mind you... my 'average' consumption stands at around 20 MPG or 15 L/100kms...

In addition to the old "Moral Patrol" - I was also expecting the 'Photoshop-crew' to arrive on scene pretty quickly....

If you like I can try again 2morrow and get some background (front windshield) scenery in the pic too.....

...anyway, thats what my speedo was reading, and it was DAMN QUICK!

nizmainiac
01-29-2007, 01:55 PM
it could be that the rear end of the car was jacked up put on axle stands , the front wheels well and truly chocked put in 5th gear and floored for a bit to gain the 160mph speedo reading

It looks like he used a flash, and in such a situation he could have shot it with the shutter open only for a short time, maybe something like 1/4,000 of a second, which doesn't give much time for vibrations to blur the image.

Your tire /wheel combo has a slightly smaller overall diameter than stock. Perhaps that combined with the 3.91 is enough to get the M30 to pull north of 6k in top gear. Given that the computer assumes the larger tire, the indications make sense.
For whatever it's worth 3200 revs in my touring = 82mph.

Here's one from my 951 over the summer. As for blurry, a flash will make it crisp if you've prefocussed the camera. I had set this shot up on my DSLR so all I needed to do was grab the camera once cruising at 150 and snap the shot. Everything depends on setup. As for if an M30 can get going that fast, that's up for debate, but I have no doubts the photo is doable.

A European 535 with 211 HP RPM runs as per spec. 235 kmh.
I assume the final drive is different from the US version.
So let's assume that a good going one runs 240-245 kmh and considering the error margin in accuracy of the speedmeter (always plus according to EU rules), that is a real pic.
Nothing special in Europe to drive more than 200 kmh on the Autobahn.

The M30 doesn't produce much power over 6K with a stock cam, airbox, chip.....

I have my pre and post chip dyno runs (i'll dig 'em up and scan them).

Enjoy your driving, be safe and between you and me ... even though I agree the french motorways are pretty smooth compared to uk roads, me thinks your photo could be smoother with a bit more practice in front of your pc. :)

I give you a sporting 5/10 for effort!

The Euro 535i had a stated top speed of 153mph; North American models were limited to a lower speed. Assuming the picture shows 6400 rpm, and assuming a stock tire diameter of 25.6 inches, and assuming a fifth gear ratio of 0.812, we can calculate the mph given the diff ratio of 3.91:

MPH = (engine rpm * tire diameter) / (rear end ratio * transmission gear ratio * 336)
MPH = (6400 * 25.6) / (3.91 * 0.812 * 336)
MPH = 154

My rough calculations yesterday using 3.91 diff, .81 top gear and the tire size stated got a result of ~147mph. Given the speedo thinks the tires are 5% larger 154 should be indicated. Looks like the speedo is a bit optimistic, but not absurdly so, 6% off I reckon. So as I said 147mph actual, not unbelieveable at all.

well that makes ur car exactly like the Japanese specs. it come with a 3.91 diff. but with stock chip it reaches to the 6200 RPM @ 235 Km/h so with a rev limit increase to 6500 u wont get more than 240 - 245Km/h so maybe ur meter is 5 - 10 Km over the real speed. to confirm that you can reset the OBC when pressing the speed button and see the reading.

Edit: do u have manual or auto tranny? the above is for auto tranny. Japanese specs never came with manual. if u have manual is it 5 or 6 speeds from an M5?

Manual 5-speed, sintered rally-style clutch...

OOhh You need a button clutch for 160 Kw? What a POS in traffic!

Why would you bother? Hmm never seen a RALLY STYLE E34!

Changing diff ratio's would have thrown your speedo out (over reading):p

M5 diff Eh? Are you sure it's not just a 3.9 LSD? (Mine has the 3.9 lsd too...deffinately NOT out of an M5! but a 535 AUTO)

so you M30 powered E34 has a faster terminal speed than an E34 M5 Huh....Don't think so. With nearly 90 Kw less than the M5?

Maybe you should get a pic of a gps reading in your car at that speed.

Also how did you bypass the speed limiter? Aftermarket ecu?

But if you used a flash was on, that would have made the (relatively dimly lit) range and mileage displays invisible, yet in your photo they're bright enough to be visible during flash photography?

Are you sure you weren't motionless and didn't use a flash?

The M5 was electronically limited to 250km/h, as per the pact between Mercedes, Audi and BMW. Without the limiter, the 3.8litre M5 was capable of about 275km/h. Having said that, I don't beleive for a second that a 535i can make it to 160mph, I reckon the lower diff ratio means that his speedo calibration is way out as someone mentioned earlier.

Here in Europe French drivers are famous:D ... Don't forget this, Frenchs were the first who made plastic bumbers:)
Hey Flamin, a partner of mine to my work owns a 525 with auto trans, he says that he touched the 260Km...and he believes himself! I'll give him your photo

Oi, the Italians are worse!

We took the landrover over there, and within 20 minutes of crossing the swiss/italian border an old renault 5 tried to take us out on the motorway... there's about a 2 tonne difference!

They're crazy I tell you, crazy!

EDIT : Having said that, the Greek are the only people capable of appearing a car out of thin air the instant you put a toe out to cross a road!
