There are devices available that fire the camera when they detect a light flash - PERFECT for this type of stuff

Reminds me that I need a nice camera.

They have limited success because the bolts last like 3 milliseconds and by the time the sensor detects it you only see the bottom of the 'bolt'..... Tried one by Nikon.

Best result is iso 200, 15 second exposure, infinite focus. I use a 14-55mm wide angle lens.

Here's a few more from the weekend...

The first has a weird loop.....

The above were ~15 sec shutter shots at night (last summer), but the below were during the day, so they're taken from video

And this one was waiting for a bus in Puno, Peru a couple weeks ago

this picture is the best of all, I love lightning in general and I was obsessed in taking pictures of it, I just tried to catch them with digital cameras ( not professional for sure ) so I got these

nice photos but do you realize the amount of wasted energy on each one of those electric strike, one day perhaps we'll have the technology to catch and store it and by the way minimize the use of other energy sources (and lower polution). Permits to dream !

well ... this is the way the ozone layer is rebuilt ;) .. as nitrogen and oxygen needs that kind of energy to stick together. so it's good.

Awesome pictures! We hardly ever get lightning where I'm from so it's always cool to see it.

i've been waaaay closer then i wanted to be a few times, under 100', ever see it cross the room inside or your house? (too young to really grasp that one at the time) not long ago during a storm i kept hearing/seeing arcing behind my computer desk (while i was online) off the cat5 that runs downstairs, the computer/router/cable modem all survived but the wall wart for my scanner got toasted, watched a power transformer on top of the pole in front of the shop i use to work at get hit and a couple seconds later explode into one of the biggest fireballs i've seen all from about 75-100' away, had it hit the metal roof on the shop i work in a couple times, that usually signals break time!!! been out by a lake helping the boss with a boat and every ones hair started standing up from the charge, "wonder what that means?" means time to get the **** off the dock right god damn now!!! i didn't stick around to find out when/where it hit

thats awesome ... I only been in a situation like that once, but I didn't stay longer cuz our family decided to leave the place as they panicked ... it was a hilly area around 10K' over sea level and it has this atmosphere in the afternoon, that it starts to get cloudy and then rain. so after 30 min setting the place and starting the fire for BBQ, it started lightning! it was awesome and I took my cousin to look at one big black cloud near by as there was a transmission antenna on the top of the hill next to us and we expected to see a spark, but the spark discharged in the tree where my family was sitting and that was just in front of us. luckily it was raining that time so the spark ran through the water and didn't cause any fire ... but non of us had any standing hair :P ... that's really spooky ...
