just got done flushing with the old fashioned manual method since the power bleeder was taking too long. anyway i noticed the pedal is a lot more firm now. is that normal?

It firmed it up a bunch for me on the E34 when I flushed with regular valvoline stuff. On my Volvo, not so much.

air bubbles

Moisture is bad..it degrades the system and turns to vapor when heated.

If it was that bad, i'd repeat the flush job in late spring or beginning of summer.
The new fluid from this flush job should loosen up the remaining crud in the brake system, then your good for regular bi-annual system flush.
Very cheap insurance !!
