first of all let me introduce myself. My name is Luke and i've owned numerous 3 series bmw's but this is my first 5 series. a 91 525i :)

now my DME went bad on the car and i got a replacement for it from a buddy of mine out of his 325i. The e36 was a non vanos car which is the same as my 5 series so i figured the DME's would be the same since they share the exact same M50 engine correct?

well the e36 DME ends in 402 where the 525's DME ends in 405. I tried the 402 on the 525i and it runs but it seems like at the lower rpms it acts a little strange.

anyone know what the differences are between the two dme's?

anyone know where i can get a 405 dme for cheap? :D

You could also swap the 405's chip into the 402 if the chip is still good and it's just the DME board that's bad.

402 and 403 should work in place of the 405. The 405 was used up to 9/91, the 402 and 403 were used after 9/91. Not sure what the difference is, but word on the street is that they are interchangable.
