E46 cat converter removal!!?

Would I gain any performance boost by removing the cat converter? I know it helps with ease of flow... but would it be noticeable? If so, I would still pass US emissions, right?

there may be a small difference in power but the computer would get pissed off without the cat, around here if you have any codes you can't get a inspection sticker, most engines run a little better with a slight amount of back pressure (usually more bottom end power)
