e30 318is - MPG Guage question..

My MPG gauge stopped working yesterday when i disconnected/reconnected my battery.

It will not register anything when i am under 3000 rpm - it stays maxed out as if i am in neutral. When i hit 3000 rpm the needle drops completely until i shift (and drop back under 3000).

Is this a common error? Any thoughts.

never see that happen in the many years i've worked on bmws on a e30, the most common problem is usually when the speedo signal dies the mpg gauge dies, but the speedo is dead too
