What exactly do i need to connect my laptop that got CarSoft 6.5 software to my BMW E36 M44 1.9L engine 1997/1998?

Do i have to use and interface between my laptop and my car or its a direct cable between my laptop COM port and Car 20 pin connector?

any pinout that can help me?
