Hi guys,

Just taking time out from exams. My steering feels wierd. It seems to get lighter and heavier and lacks precision. I've changed all of the control arms and the outer tie rods, so there's no clunking or shimmy. Could this be steering pump related?

Thanks,

Mark

if you don't have servotronic but do have a filter in your power steering cannister...these cars had different combinations...then you may have mild blockage in your power steering hydraulic circuit. Can also be adjustment of the steering box, tightness of the 32mm nut under the dash etc. Also, check your fluid, belt condition etc.

I notice the same thing too, never did figure out what it might be. Funny, considering the University of Florida claims I'm proficient in designing hydraulic systems, but I have no idea what I'm doing.

It's a 1990 525, so no servotronic? I've already tightened the steering box nut and the nut under the driver's side kickplate. The fluid looks filthy, though.

hi
how is it going now? from your notes it sounds that the steering box has to be replaced...
I have the same issue on my 525tds 1993 and the mechanic told me the same. I hope to be able to find a used one because spare parts are very expensive here (steering box # 1200euros!!)
cheers

Hi Bill
Thanks for your answer. I have checked it but there is no servotronic system on my BMW.
I'm still seeking a used steering box...
Have a good week end

How can you tell servotronic from non-servotronic steering?
