You would give up the 535i? Why? for a 1990 car, it's a great vehicle. If you are looking for more power, why not the 550? I would not want to get another, unless new (<15K miles) because I would not know how to work on it.

Keep kidding yourselves guys... I have both, and the 540i/6 gets my ****-eating-grin award any time. ;)

Exactly refering to Tim...hey btw between the 2, like how much more power can you feel? like percentage wise haha

An M5 is faster, and also stays in that nice straight 6 bmw tradition :)

Actually, from what I understand they're basically the same in the city. Similar 0-60's, and the V8 makes the 540i torque more driveable, the M5 has to be really wrung out to shine.

That said, an M5 would run circles around a similarly equipped 540i at the track... but I have a small car for that duty. :D

I'd say the 540i definitely pulls harder on the freeway, but it's most notible from a stop or at low rpm's. That's when the V8 just GOES, while you have to wait for the big 6 to spin up a bit.

Plus with the 6-spd, 75mph is ~2,000RPM, so freeway cruising is pretty chill.

That is what I hate about my car, doesn't go anywhere til ~3500 rpm. 6th great on the highway will be nice too. Damn I need to get my 540i running

Exactly it takes a little bit for it to get going from a stop...

the 540 feels MUCH faster than the 535 and more refined even though the big six can be uncannily smooth..I have driven two 540 six speeds, and and was strangely unmoved....I tell ya tho that engine......There is quite a big price difference here so even tho I would love one( I am sure) the $ difference isnt worth it.However if a real mint one shows up.....
