Hi guys,

I have a '93 540i saloon with a dead battery, which is located underneath the back seat. I have read the manual and searched this site, but can not find any advice on how to remove the back seat. (There is some in the manual - but it is a bit scant and I can't mke the instructions fit what I see when I look at my car) - any advice?

Regards

Nick

Advice, there are two clips holding the seat in. Each one is directly under the front of the seat, and right behind each of the front seats. All you have to do is grab ahold and yank. It's scary, but thats all there is to it. Grab, yank, HARD!

Thanks Mac, that was really helpful - I would never have had the confidence to just grab hard and yank without your help.

I'm going to have a go the same way - good to know that it has already worked for you though. Cheers.

first time I did this there was NO WAY to do it without getting in the back seat area and standing as I pulled up. Sideways was not even an option, I could not believe the force required on a seat never removed. My super human strength was challanged. Key is a sharp jerk straight up.

I had to take out the backseat (disconnect battery) for some steering wheel work last night and faught with it. Like Jeff said, I had to actually stand in the back to get them out of the clip. Also make sure you brace yourself, very first time I did it, I got a large bruise on my back.

its a great place for a battery!! i cant imagine with all the associated stuff that goes with it where else would it go. is the e34 the only bmw with the battery under the seat?

Audis also have the battery there. Can be a real mess if the battery leaks. Not the greatest idea ever IMHO.

My Alfa GTV6 had the battery in the trunk.
