Just bought 2 cases (6 qts per case) of Pennzoil Platinum full synthetic 5w30 at Kragen autoparts. After $15/case rebate and coupon, it's only $6/case or $0.99/quart (original $5.99/qt). I know it's not the best oil out there but the price is hard to resist. Sales til the end of Jan.

Is it ok to switch between Mobil1 and pennzoil? If so, this sounds like a good deal for me, assuming that kragen has stores with different names where i live (i think they do).

Mobile 1 = true synthetic, pennzoil synthetic = refined dino oil. It's really up to you what side of that debate you take, and if you want to switch or not, you'll find as many opinions as there are car owners.

M1 is not true synthetic. at most it is 90%, and some grades are actually less than 20%.

that being said i would pick PP-5W30 over M1-5W30, as i have seen quite a few used oil analysis' done on both and the PP turns up better results.

and no im not saying i recommend it, its just that i dont DISLIKE it as much as M1 5W30.

Got the Pennzoil Platinum full synthetic 5w30 at Kragen yesterday - thanks for the sale info. I'll use this in Van I have. Think I'll keep M1 in the BMW.

Math don't adds up. $5.99 a bottle equals $36 a case of 6. With rebate, it is $36-15 = $21 and divides by 6 is $3.50 each. Unless, you are going to return one case after submitting rebate... but no return without UPC.

here is the add verbage..

Platinum Full Synthetic Motor Oil 99¢ Per Qt.

After Mail-In Rebate.
Coupon Price Per 6 Pack....20.94
Mail-In Rebate Per 6 Pack....15.00 Coupon Price Per 6

So we are paying basically $21 - $15 = $6 for 6 = $1 each..

adds up to me.

There is a Kragen coupon which drop the price to $21/case and then minus $15 rebate equal $6/case. I think you can find the coupon in their newspaper Ad. I didn't have coupon but they still honor the discount.

.

You know I keep reading this on forums but if you go to their website Mobil says it is a true synthetic. http://www.mobil1.com/USA-English/MotorOil/Oils/Mobil_1_FAQs.aspx#FAQs1

So what's the deal?

yeah, mobil claims it is still true, some people are claiming it's not, I can't find any hard evidence that it's not....

a spectral analysis of the base oil confirmed that M1 5W30 does not contain group 4 PAO, and instead contains hydroisomerized group 3 oil, like castrol syntec.

that does not make it a bad oil, it just means you should change your oil 4 times as often as the BMW recommended service, instead of twice as often if you are using synthetic oil.

the problem arises that they did not drop the price or tell anyone, they just changed a bit of the legal wording on their website and bottles in the same manner that castrol did.

so that means it's time to switch to royal purple ;)

the reason they switched (other than greed) is because the 5W30 range is by definition low in viscosity range. the synthetic base they were using had a higher range than was required, and instead of fudging with the chemistry to LOWER the VI, they switched to a good high VI GIII base instead.

Is this also true of the 0-40 M1 that many of us use?

nope, the 0W40 is full synthetic with a better additive package.
