http://www.bmwe34.net/e34main/maintenance/electrical/LKM.htm

The solder points on the board are where they fail, redo them all.

Well E34.net is wrong, per...

And I've never sodered so I can't easily spot the failed ones...

Academic Arguement

the fix is still the same.

Finds the larger points on the PC board for the realys and resolder.

Just gotta use a good rosin core solder and reflow those points.

Some guys get real anal and desolder, but I've got better things to do...

So should I just place a little bit of soder at the tops of these "caps", (hilighted in red)? The "broken" ones kinda look like the top (cap) of the soder is breaking apart from the base of the soder (only noticable with a maginifying glass)????

A few point just above those in red, they correspond to the upper part of the relay and should be done too.

Looks like you have the idea.

I think it is a good idea o pick up some solder wick and remove the old solder and apply new.

Ok but my theory on the "caps" is correct? And for my clarification can you please take the origional picture and hilight ALL the points I should add soder too?

Thanks man.

Your theory on the cap is correct, but it's very hard to see the failure.

So I resolder all the suspect points, try not to add too much, just reflow a clean joint

Ok I see, but liek I said, just add soder to the tip (cap), not around it haha?

your going to melt the silver metal and it will flow and re join the relay pin and the copper plating in the PC board. You will be heating up the cap area, but avoid over loading the area with solder and possibly creating a short between other point caps near by.

you just want to get the solder to melt, add a little new solder with rosin to clean the suface and re flow to the pin and PC board

If you've never soldered before, go find a broken piece of electronics and practice a little...It's not hard to and you'll feel much better when you tackle the LKM.
