So I've had this 1989 535i for about 10 months and had this problem with the fog lights from the get-go. I can turn them on and off if the are on only for a couple of minutes. Any longer and the only way to get them off is to hit the LKM with my hand. I have to assume a relay is hanging up inside the LKM. The LKM was changed by PO about 25,000 miles ago. I have read some stuff about re-soldering the (LKM) circuit board. Or maybe replace the relay attached on the circuit board.
Where would I get a new relay from? Does this sound about right or is there something else that should be check?

Thanks

Jim

There is one relay inside the LKM for the front foglights, 1 for the low beam headlights, one for the hi beams, and in European cars one more for the rear fog lights.
Looks like the contact for the fog light sticks sometimes.
You cannot get a single relay for the LKM.
Either you desolder it and check it where it contacts, clean it. I did that same procedure with the mustard relay relays, there are 2 inside. With very fine emery paper I sanded the contacts and bended them a bit.
Or resolder the complete LKM.
Go to my website below and read under e32fixes.com the details.
And if you want to know which relay in the LKM is for fog lights and which pin does what, read my write up here
