I need to make a copy of my key for my '95 525i. Does anybody know if this key can be cut, or do I have to order it from the dealership/BMW?

You'll need to order it from the dealership if it's an EWSII car. I have a 95 525 with EWSII and had to order it from them.

How do I know if it has EWSII?

Build date. Anything including 1/95 and later should be EWSII in the US. See your driver's door sticker to see the build date.

So if i have a a pre '95 car (mine is a 10/89' build date), what have people found to be the cheapest way to get a spare key made. It is still a pretty odd looking key, I always figured the dealer would be the only place to get them.

There are two issues:

1. it's pretty cheap to get a locksmith in the area to cut your key BUT it may be worn such that a cut would be too inaccurate to work property

2. a new one cut from code at the dealer may be too new and not fit well with the old cylinder

Having said that, duping the one you have is almost always the cheapest way to go. If you want a backup key, then order a valet spare from the dealer.
