my 1995 bmw 540i six speed runs rough when its cold outside (below 30 F) and the motor is cold. it will idle below 500rpm and even stall. the check engine light even comes on. after the car has warmed the light will go out and come back on occaisionly, like when stopped at a light. if anyone can point me in the right direction i would be very thankful. it has brand new O2 sensors and the airflow meters were just cleaned. it otherwise runs excellent.

How did you clean the airflow meter? As far as I know, it has a thin wire inside and has no maintainable part.

try the air intake temp sensor and the coolant temp sensors.

search "intake gaskets" or "intake leak"

Classic 4.0 Intake Manifold Gasket Leak symptoms. Do as Jeff suggests. There are volumes here and on other sites discussing this issue. I had the same issue with my 4.0. This is the time of year when it pops up on everyone.- JT

Had the same exact symptom as you. Did the intake gaskets and PCV plate and now life is good. :D
