sold the e34 as some may know and have been taking my time driving my business truck around, all the while my partner is getting pissed (to many miles on the BUSINESS truck) so now im looking for a car much more intently. the origional point of selling my e34 was to get a commuter car, some basic transporation to get me from A to B and get good gas mileage on the way. i was thinking civic dx 5spd, as one can be had for about 2-3 grand in good shape and get 35-40 mpg freeway.

i agree. i had one and loved it, the civic and the E30 really arent comparable. The civic has a boring interior and the buzzing 4cyl engine will drive you crazy on the freeway.

The E34 meets that criteria for me. Since you want smaller and are familiar with Bimmers and apparently like how they drive then it should be no contest.
E30s are a barrel of monkeys to drive, the Honda is a refrigerator on wheels.
Try for an e model with stick shift, plenty of torque down low so you aren't always rowing the shifter in traffic.

plus its not uncommon for an eta to get a realistic 30mpg on the highway too and the eta engine is the most durable M20 variant because its low revving. A friend of mine has 215k on his and drives it everyday as his commuter. Id also avoid automatics because I drove one once and it was horribly slow.

List your priorities. If reliability and MPG are at the top then it's civic hands down.

However you've asked a very obviously biased bunch which leads me to believe that while you should get the civic, you really WANT an e30.... not that there's anything wrong with that, I mean I have two impractical cars and I live downtown. I don't NEED any car really.

You also have to consider the cost of insurance and registration blah blah blah

Why not find a 525 or an E34 diesel? I average about 19-22mpg mixed. Are you trying to get 30+ ?

Um...Lets see....Its a REAL import. Oh and if you mod it in any way you won't get the ricer name stamped on you.

Dude, screw a civic, get a crx-si found one for $500 here, was thinking about turbocharging it for about another grand, already have the 1.6L engine.

Once you have that done and over with, buy the e34 again like you know you want to.
