BMW Drivers Club supersprint is on 21st January.

Thought I would get in early with this although it is really only a few weeks away. It is a bit earlier than last year.
This was the meet the E34 guys finally met last year.
Interstate guys are more than welcome, we could hook you up with an overnight stay if you wanted. PM for details.
Come and join us, have a chat.
We'll try for another photo shoot on the track at lunch time.

does anyone live near the track? or maybe it can just be cold cuts and a bit of salad, bread etc. sounds like less trouble even though you guys know how much i like my barbies. the easier the better perhaps.

All is good to go with the Barbie. Just need numbers now as it would be pointless doing it for 4 guys.

:)

Greg, can I help out at all? We're going to need supplies too. Perhaps a few of us could each bring an esky with drinks, someone a plate of sandwiches, someone else some beers.... I'm thinking we all split it up so the task isn't hard on any of us and we end up well-provisioned. I'd expect $10 a head'd give us enough in the kitty to fund it all that way... anyone else have any suggestions or preferences?

she's actually looking at buying either a W124 or e34 :D her current car is an astra and keeps breaking down with all kinds of random BS (with the huge mileage of 90 000 km lol). so who knows she might come to the next meet if she gets an e34. I think she is going to look at a nice kashmir metallic 535i soon. think she prefers bmws to mercs though, i tried to get her to get merc because i don't want her to get a sporty car like an e34, being the passenger's seat of her astra is scary enough.

I don't think that I am going to make it.

Tranny dropped it's lunch on Friday (no Reverse on a steep slope) unless a miracle takes place I won't be heading down.

It's a shame to cause I was looking forward to hanging out with you guys again and getting in a good long distance run with the new suspension.

It's a shame to cause I was looking forward to hanging out with you guys again and getting in a good long distance run with the new suspension. That's a rough happening mate, we can only guess what on you were doing in reverse... how'd it occur? Tell me you weren't pulling a reverse doughnut up a hill sideways in the dry... with all that rubber it'd be a problem... but seriously- that's bad news I was hoping you might be able to come too.

Have you a good tranny place in mind? One option is to pull it out yourself and send it to ZF in Arndell Park, Sydney (http://zf.com.au) for a factory rebuild. But they actually have a dealer that does bus and truck transmissions (apart from supplying auto manufacturers the stuff they can't source here, this is ZFs business in Australia) near you.

I expect that if you took it to them they would pull it and fix it perfectly, but if it were complex they could easily send it to Arndell Park- I know they have people that do the problem trannys that are so bad the others (ie dealers and transmission specialists) give up, there.

These guys know more about ZF trannys than anyone as they work on nothing else and have all the specialised tooling. I found by visting them they gave me a good deal face to face- especially if you can leave the car there for some time- the trucks and buses have to come in and go out on fixed timetables so if you can fit around that it can help them price the job more relaxedly. Other people have saved a thousand (or maybe not?) by going to a person that 'knows' ZFs, but I couldn't find one of them, still haven't. However Matty found someone through BeeEms in Hornsby that is good, we think. Best ask him about that...

Gen and Rob, thanks for the info for tranny joints. LOL Heavy Automatics deal in that alone, Heavy Automatics Trucks, Buses, Tonka Toys etc... They don't have any of the test gear for these transmissions I did speak to Garth over the phone about it and he couldn't recommend anyone other than the stealer...

Thanks for the info on Bobby Love down at Nerang Rob, trouble is I need to keep it local, if at all possible, I was going to look him up if I came up dry in Brisbane.

I searched through the yellow pages, found the only place in Brisbane that can work on ZF's and Getrags down near Springwood. Got on the blower and had a chat, he was very surprised that this box even had a problem with only 107,000 Kms on the chassis. We are pulling it on Tuesday 2nd, and well hook it up to his transmission test gear and run it to diagnose the problem.

He is convinced that it will be the 20 cent piece failure that is not allowing it to drive properly in reverse.

Either way, I will keep you all updated and let you know what the outcome is, fingers crossed it is a simple repair and I will be able to make the BBQ/Wog Salad/Photo Opportunity.

One Question Greg, Is there any possibility that the track will be open to us at all?

Cheers!

Hey Keith, does this mean your going to be here??

I think they accept interstate membership (IE: if you're a member of QLD chapter) also you'll need to fill in an Entry form for the event:
http://www.bmwclubnsw.asn.au/clubsport.html

License details:
http://www.cams.com.au/content.asp?PageID=Competitors&ObjectID=311

As with last year (I hope), we will drive around the circuit (slowly) and stop for photo ops. WE will need to fill out CAMS disclaimers for this as well.
I'll clear this up with the Clerk of the Course prior to the event.

cheers,
Greg

.......and I still haven't heard from the shop yet.

Took the car down on Monday 8th, to Boxstop transmissions.

He has quoted me $550.00 remove and replace with fresh oil, we have agreed that he will get it on the bench and strip it down inspect the clutch packs, the actuating piston and seals including the valve body and we would converse and make a decision from there.

Heres hoping that it is only the reverse actuator seal (this is notorious for breaking down/disintergrating and leaking in the the 5hp30 transmissions), the symptoms are that it has a delay when going into reverse when hot and as the seal is leaking it doesn't apply reverse properly there for it slips burning the fluid a little everytime.

Now I am awaiting the call to see if there is any other damage.

Will keep you posted.

Cheers!

Spoke to the guys at the shop today.................... not good.

The "F" clutch has all but exploded, it also had punched a checkball through something (apparently this is normal for the 5HP30's) all the clutch packs are burnt and generally sad inside, but the planetary sets are all in perfect condition, no marks, no chipped teeth, Valve body is all ok as well, grubby, but all good no scoring on any of the acutator pistons.

So I either spend AUS$3200.00 on the "F" Clutch replacment or we step upto the next level and drop a cool $6K for a full overhaul/rebuild.

I spoke to the Wife about it and as we plan to keep the car we will be spending the $6K for the complete overhaul/rebuild. Now that we have had to do this, Unlees I hear otherwise from the Wife I cannot see myself being able to attend the Oran Park meet on the 21st (only 11 days away now) I don't know what the time frame for getting the car back is, but it will I expect be close.

At least now I know the Transmission is fine :) all I have to check now is the Oilpump bolts and I should have many, many Kilometers of trouble free motoring.

P.S. The guys at the shop told me that the 5HP30 transmission is capable of accepting just under 500HP without fail..............so this means that I can fit the ESS Supercharger later this year Muhahahahahaha!!!!!!!!! 411HP/307KW (at the flywheel I think) here I come!!!

Cheers!

Day after boxing day?
Mate, must have been at the "driver reviver"?
Stopped with bro-in-law on our ways to the Father-in-laws at Boat Harbour.
It was that hot, the tar in the car park had melted with large pieces of blue-metal stuck to it. Got in to drive the car and my shoes were an inch further from the pedals. Spent the rest of the trip pulling it from our shoes LOL

whats an F clutch? keith i had mine rebuilt not long ago for $3 grand. where does the $6 grand come into it? if im not wrong our boxes should be same

Matty, there is aparently 6 clutch packs in the box (Named 'A' through 'F' I don't know either, I didn't go into specifics about it at the time but I will when I pick the car up :) ). If it was a straight overhaul, it would only come in around the $3000-$3200 +$550 Remove and Replace, so $3750 Drive in, Drive out

But............

What has happened is that the checkball in the 'F' Clutch i.e. 1st and Reverse (it stops it from selecting both 1st and reverse at the same time) has worn through the drum and it has all but destroyed it, hence the extra $3200.00 on top of the overhaul to replace that clutch pack, hub and drum assembly (Genuine ZF Parts, See below).

This new clutch, hub and drum assembly is an updated version with better material on the friction plates and the checkball is coated to stop the wearing through (It is apparently a common problem with the 5HP22 and the 5HP30 transmissions) I am also getting new clutch packs fitted as well that are the same as the updated replacement set for 1st/Reverse, these new friction and driven plates have a much better coeficient of friction and are a better material (Greg, I suspect that they will also handle an increase in Horsepower in their stride ;) ) The Soleniod/Valve body is being stripped, cleaned and rebuilt with revised actuator pistons and seals and new springs. I also get a new Transmission pump and the Torque converter is being split cleaned and ovehauled as well (No I am not raising the stall....thought about it....but Nah) Of course a full seal kit as well.............just to stop the oil from running out onto the floor. :D

Also he doesn't like using 'aftermarket' parts, I got the feeling from talking to him that he had been bitten before on a BMW Auto box and he wasn't going to repeat it. He did say and I quote

"It's a lot of coin, but this transmission will be so much stonger and will last a long, long time with regular servicing"

Keep on em Keith, For $6k I'd say you could want it done right, and right on time too!! Nick Hope to see you there mate...

As you can see from the info above Nick they are really going to town on it about the only thing left of the original box with be the case that holds it all together :) I know it's hard to believe but I feel that I am getting 'value for money' with all that is being done.

I am worried about you Keith!

Now why would you go and worry Greg?? More Horsepower is never a bad thing and the ESS Supercharger system is only running at 7psi with no intercooler. It also doesn't 'whine' nor does it detract from the normal everyday parking lot shuffle one has to do to get to and from work. It is totally drivable until you stand on the 'Loud' pedal then it should really get up an boogie baby!!!!
The other great thing about it is that you don't have to modify anything on the car, this is always a selling point for me.

Anyhow, I hope to get the Boom 'n Zoom mobile back on Wednesday or Thursday this week.

Will keep you posted.

Oki Doki BUMP!!!!! aaare youuuuuuuuuuuuuuuse readyyyyyyyyyyyyy to Ruuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuumble!!!!!

Ok so a bit over the top maybe but my 2007 pagan calander tells me that 21 JANUARY IS A SUNDAY that happens to be this coming sunday!!!!!!! it seems that bbq and beers are not a go this time. i am only to attend for a brief time as I am working and will drop in between appointments stichting up dogdy bastards. Greg is away at the moment in Cairns having a good time we all hope and as such I am propaganda and logistics mein furher until el grego gets back. Anyways life changing questions to be considered for our next intelectual interlude are -

1. So we do we see the BIgfella out there on Sunday???????
2. Will The BigKriss bring his bitch or a bringa blow up bitch to fool us that he has a bitch?
3. If he does have a blow up bitch, can we blow up her? or do we blow her up? Life is so complicated by the english language guys, and half a box!

I have highlighted Monday and saturday in my dairy so that sunday will stand out. a cunning plan I know but drastic measures are called for when it gets technical!!! not much can be done about the bbq unfortunatley this time looks like you all will have to be back on an annual pilgramige to terrigal for a Mattyb BBQ. its the only way to safely plan folks drinking, eating and having a good time and not having to worry about driving etc etc, right guys!

I thought the break period was from 12:00 to 12:30 and thats the only time we can go on the track for photos. I'll be coming by myself as usual.

matty...what the ^%$# is a "wog Salad"?

mattyb
01-19-2007, 05:05 AM
hard to say really, I use it more of a generic term to describe what evers in the fridge at my house whenever we make salad. being 2 nd generation italian we still have fridges full of all the good wog tucker so i guess olives of all descriptions, cured meats, anything dried, fried then soaked in oil. But no fancy emulsion dressings. just oil, maybe lemon juice

Sorry (for me) & lucky (for you) I didn't get there guys - got caught up with a splenectomy which occupied me most of the afternoon.

That's life, I suppose. :)

Thanks for meeting up guys.
Yeah, thanks guys.
Despite the heat it was great to see you guys.

Sorry I couldn't spend a lot of time with you, I had 3 officials go down with heat exhaustion. Had to drive one home to Medlow Bath in her car, then back to Camden and then home around 1:30 this morning to the bushfires on the ridge over from me. Spectacular sight.

Paul, get those wheels on and post some pics!

cheers,
Greg

How's this?
My sister rang me around 4:30, panicking, thinking we were still in QLD, did we need to go get the dog etc. So I ring the missus, "what's happening with the fires?". "What fires?" she says, then goes to the front of the house. "oh ****!" is all I get, then "I'll call you back"
LMAO

Bloody noisy here today with the choppers and fireys screaming around everywhere.
