Recent valve adjustment for the M5 before departing to the Chicagoland area to catch up with Scott H., Brandon J., Dave R., Kris DV M5, Ross and Paul....we had a great time changing out subframe bushings in a few cars and later changed the clutch in Kris' M5 along with a stubborn worn center bearing.

Pictured are all 24 valves, each valve disc has to be removed from each valve and measured with a micrometer and recorded. That's after tappet clearances are measured with a feeler gauge to determine which valves are out of spec. The ones that are out of spec are ordered according to the measurements of the clearance and the existing disc dimensions. Then the whole process is repeated for installation of the new valve discs in order to maintain the proper clearances.

Are you sure you still want an M5?

Yep, my 02 ZX-6R was that way. Fun fun! The trick is to know a mechanic who will swap shims with you.

The S38 only requires checking the valve clearances every 15000 miles. Most of the time only 2 or 3 are out of spec and have to be changed.

As you say, ANYTIME the engine has been taken apart for whatever reason they have to be checked. This M5 had been owned by a doctor and had the head removed to fix an oil leak...(service records indicate a leaking head gasket)...at 86k miles, nontheless, I checked valve clearances just to be sure after I bought it and they were all almost identical across the board. This accomplished two things, one was to check what the current clearances were, and two was checking the work of the shop that did the work and confirmed my beliefs in that particular shop. If I wasn't able to perform my own work or needed assistance in determining a problem, I would know where to turn. Sometimes it pays to check the pros.

It's relative winfred, you'll expect big biting braking power but it won't come on until illegal speeds are attained and you press the big pedal just a little harder......then the big un's start their job and scrub off speed in a heartbeat. Just when you need it....amazing!

I think the doctor could operate in that engine bay.

BTW, you can't use that bucket depressor without cutting it in half - at least with the engine in the car... :)

yea but e30 brakes suck and just about anything will be a improvement, i can fade these things in traffic i can't imagen how much they would suck on a track

plus with real brakes and speed rated rubber i may finally get to let thing stretch it's legs, at 130 it still had some punch and that was before the last round or two of mods :D no i don't need or want the obligatory speed lecture http://members.cox.net/wdixon27/icon_jerkoff.gif

I have to do the shims when doing the valve adjustment on the Ducati, too. Kind of a pain. Always pray that they're in spec when I open the engine up.

Do you see the torn insulation on the A/C suction line?....remove the cover for the A/C lines, remove the cabling ties and viola........

Jr, this is semi-OT, but most of the old pictures you've posted of your M have expired and are now little red X's. So, uhh, could we have a new thread with lots of pictures? I promise to save them to the desktop so whenever someone asks they will be promptly shown with pride, even though it's not my M. Pretty please, with vanilla ice cream on your apple pie? I mean it is Thanksgiving and all.

Nope, a '95 Elekta, the italian special order series, with blue nappa leather and 6 speed, nurburgring suspension, and every M5 goodie imaginable.

schnell,

Nice another Duc owner

what do you have

Desmodue or Desmoquattro?? :)

530iTouring..... OMG! that is horn!

I have begun to get a hankering for a Touring after looking over the Touring thread and all the deliciously tweaked, massaged and 'sleeper' looks that some of the members Tourings have.

Alas, they only ever released the 525iT here in Australia, I did find one that has the Vanos option fitted (must have been towards the end of the line at least here) I just cannot see the benefit of the only option of a 2.5 in such a heavy car, even though I really like the Touring.

It's sad that they never released a Touring here with some grunt at least as an option. :(

First time I've seen pics of the "other" Elekta. Pretty cool. I don't normally dig a blue interior, but that one works. Still absolutely love the Tobacco interior of the other Elekta though. How many were made in your configuration of the 20 total?

Most were BRG with tobacco. There were a few daytona violets, a few silbermetallics with blue and also with black buffalo, your basic black on blacks, and one super violet

The silber/nappa blue isn't mine yet. I am still in negotiations, but I sure hope it works out. Someone will get my euro spec 530iT if and when I get the elekta.

sorry to put the cart before the horse
