Hi, Please Can Anyone Help!

My 1995 525 TDS has developed an intermittent fault - when the engine is idling it becomes 'lumpy' and often stalls. Apart from this the car is perfect, starts first time hot or cold and runs as smooth as silk when your foot is on the gas pedal. I have taken the car to a local mechanic who initially replaced the fuel filter and put some additive into the fuel tank but this did not solve the problem.

I then took it to a Diesel specialist who, after a morning checking it over has advised that he 'suspects' that it is the Fuel Pump which is more than likely the problem and will cost in the region of £1000 GBP to replace!!! (OOOOOUUUUUUCH!!) :(

Has anyone heard or had experience of this problem? I would really apreciate any advice before I commit to such an expense as I am not convinced that this is the problem as he had never come across this before.

Regards
Ziggy

hmm, thats actually pretty cheap for the injection pump, they usually run around $1800 USD, which is like, 3000GBP?

it could also be the fuel pressure sensor, or the pump solenoid valve. the valve is about 1000GBP so maybe thats what he was talking about. the pump itself is mechanicallly driven and rarely has problems.

i sure hope he wasnt talking about the actual fuel pump, which is like, $200.

also see if you can measure the voltage to the glow plugs, as the glow plug relay may be toast.
