Refinishing wood trim

Has anyone had success refinishing the wood interior trim?? My "T" gear selector handle has a couple of cracks in it and I was thinking of refinishing it.

He swapped in a 5-speed in his E32 and had to replace the same piece you're talking about. IIRC he started with new wood and put an epoxy-type bar top coating on it. His web page is http://www.nmia.com/~dgnrg/
