I have a 1992 525it that I really like. There is a 1995 525it for sale nearby with slightly higher miles for about what I paid for the 1992. Were there any significant improvements between 1992 and 1995? Does VANOS make much difference? Does the added complexity bring new problems?

1995 should have ASC+T (traction control) and driver and passenger airbags.

'95 will have had AST as an available option ('94, too), whether the car has it is more a function of the mindset of whomever was ordering the cars for the dealer and what region of the country it came from. The '95 will have the exterior updates (body colored lowers, new rockers, V8 grille, etc), and Vanos makes a big difference when you're pushing that GM slushbox with that little bitty engine. If it's a luxury package car the interior door panels will be much more durable, too. Other than that and and the normal upgrades along the way, they're pretty much the same. The appearance items always make the '95s look like somewhat newer models.

Couldn't have said it better myself. And I do wish mine had ASC, but it was originally a Hilton Head car. Not sure when the gathered leather started but it feels much nicer, especially with the burled walnut.

I like the painted lowers, skirts, and the Premium package stuff, so I'll do only '95 E34s. I wouldn't get an older one, but that's just IMO.

VANOS makes a big difference to me, more fun in the upper ranges.

IMO, Newer is better, especially on items that are "age" dependent. I agree with what others have side about the 95s apperance items. Even so, is the double sunroof still a potential problem on the 95?

Bad luck, it was gone when I called the guy back.
