Hello people, i'm new here & was wondering if anyone could give me a bit of advice on which oil to choose. The previous owner used 20w50 Castrol i think. Finding it hard to locate any good 20w50 oils.

Any alternatives?

Many thanks, BJ.

Depends on where you're from BJ....if you're in the US, use Mobil 1 15w50 synthetic extended service (15000 mile oil). But change it at regular intervals and not at 15000..=)

I just changed the oil in my M5 yesterday, I found 6 quarts of Mobil 1 15w50 synthetic at Target for $2 a quart on closeout, the parts stores get over $5 a quart.

If you're looking for "Dino" oil, you still need at least 15w50...

I'm from the UK mate (London) & was considering the Mobil 1 as my mate recommended it. However, i'm finding it hard findind 20w50.

Is it impossible to find?

If you're intended to use Dino 20w50, sometimes it's not stocked on the shelves. You have to ask the counter guy, or maybe they will order it for you. I know that's the case with the Mobil 1 0w40 I run in the 318iS.

Although regular changed Dino in the M5 is sufficient, most of the M5 owners I know use Mobil 1. (except Anthony)...:D

Check www.m5board.com

All of those hard core guys swear by the Castrol TWS(?) 10W60.

I use RedLine 10W40 in mine. (Jr doesn't know me :) )

Also - change out your timing chain tensioner before Wout gets ya!

Okay, i was considering using the Mobil1 Motorsport 15w-50.

That's still not 20w50 though. The previous owners used 20w50 on my bad boy. Just thinking where i can get it from at a reasonable price?

I settled with Castrol 15w40 high mileage earlier.

Thanks for your time buddy.

for the M5, 10W60 castrol or 10W40 redline as Anthony says is probably the best match, a 20wt when cold oil is rather thick, especially for the UK and will increase the amount of cold start wear.

if you lived in Texas that would be another story.

DONT USE ZERO WEIGHT FOR THE E34 M5. Don't use anything less than 10 weight, I run Mobil 1 15-50. The tolerances in the S38 motor are very different to today's tolerances. Go to m5board.com as mentioned above and search by "oil".

The chiltons (sp?) manual is very explicit about this too - it says not to use one particular oil, though whether it's synthetic or natural I'm not sure... will have to wait till I get home.

I've an inkling it say's dont use synthetic under any circumstances - one of em wears out the engine pronto style.

iirc you're better with a high viscosity oil in the S engines.
