I filld up my tank today, 89 midgrade, so ebcasue I have to run 91 premium, is my only choice to run my tank dry by then?

youll be fine as long as you dont hammer it. Listen for knock and reduce peddle as necessary. Under load is when you can damage the engine

Aww dang I was just waiting to get it to tear it up but I will abide by my best ability, but it should be an outurnity to hear what actual knocking/pinging is becasue I cannot really image what it actually sounds like...but until my next fill up, what kind of damage can it do?

Add octane booster from any parts store, should bump your octane to required level.

booster that are supposed to increase octane work like buying interest points on a loan, 1 point = .01 not 1.0

better to wait to refill.

Where are you getting your chip from? I didn't get any orders from California recently.

EAT chips require 91 octane, you could use what you can of the 89, then top it off with 93 ...non scientific calculation is:

1/2 tank 89 + 1/2 tank 93=91

It may take some time for the computer to adapt to the EAT chip so I wouldn't hammer it too hard at first.:D

I just replaced my battery which caused a reset, it may be purely psycho but it seemed like it was a little sluggish for the first 50 miles or so.

sorta sounds like someone dropped a metal can of washers down a flight of stairs, or a cracklly sounding diesel, generally happens under a load with lots of throttle


I cannot really image what it actually sounds like...but until my next fill up

yea the #'s match, thanks for your words everyone, including jeff anf mark, i am meeting witht he guy in durate saturday, hes on your page on the lit of distribuitors or sumthin, although i dont knwo if i should go for a higher rev chip or stock, and we dont offer 93 octance so the highest i can go is 91...so do i reallly ned to burn a whole tank of gas in 2 days...**** lol

It shouldn't be too hard if you use email. I've been working at a client's location every day so I'm not at my home office Monday to Thursday, and my cell phone will not work in their office as the signal is too low. I'll usually respond within 2 or 3 days.

Posts are not a good way to contact me as I may not see them.


I rarely receive PM's from anyone here but when I do, they always get answered.

Ok you must be meeting with Jeff Ireland (Ireland Engineering) who is in Duarte.
He may have a few chips in stock if you have an M20 as normally he keeps a few of those.

I wouldn't recommend upping the rev limiter...easy way to make the engine go boom. I know that your M20 isn't as high strung by any means as the S38, but people who have chipped the S38 with a higher rev limiter routinely grenade the motors.

But he's not running an S38 so how does this apply to an M20?

The S38b36 will suffer from torsional vibration and possible crank hub failure at > 7250 rpm. The M20 is safe till 7100. A 6900 rev limit is fine. If it wasn't, I'd be hearing about it.

I read VentoGT's post and thought you have an M20.

The m30b35 is fine to 6800 rpm.

the m20 is fairly tough, i missed a shift once and damn near pegged the tach, probably better then 7500 before i caught it

I would keep stock limit with M30, you dont gain power at higher rpms.

I ordered the stock limit for my M5 (S38B36) - but it cuts fuel at 7,500rpm (I've hit it a couple of times and am a bit wary of it now) - except when the engine is cold. It cuts fuel at 1950 rpm until the oil is up to 60 degrees C. It makes it rather hard to drive until it warms up. I emailed Mark over three weeks ago but never did get a reply.

Its hard to know what I've got here.

Please send me another email and I'll respond quickly. About 3 weeks back, my ISP moved their email servers to hotmail. This caused a problem as the spam filters they use catch all email unless the sender has been pre-approved. If the mail sits in that spam folder for 5 days, it gets deleted. That may be what happened.

OK, so I went out there and got it installed, tho I only have 89 so I havent really tried the car out yet and ive driven in about 25 miles with the new chip, tho Jeff Ireland did not have the stock rev, he got me the 6500 rev...so we'll see how all that goes...should i be noticing anythin or....iono lol

syphon out your petrol into a friends car and leave just 10L or so, then fill her up with 91 or 93.
Syphoning petrol isnt very hard, just dont get it in your mouth!

Alrite so everything is running great, I havent gotten rid of that tank of 89 yet, I got 1/4th left so just a little bit, so then when I get the 91 I can really try the chip out...tho I've been noticing my MPG neddle likes to "dance" around, not a accurate as before witht he stock chip it seems, any ideas?

I don't think any octane above the "special 91" blend that is closer to 90 has been available in California for at least 3 years.

Mark, do you have an anser for my question of why I believe my MPG and MAYBE my tachometer may be acting erratic after your chip install, otherwise I'm happy!

The chip can not cause that erratic behaviour. Try your old chip and you will see. Most likely, there are some bad connections in the dash circuit boards. I had to repair some bad joints in my 733's dashboard circuit boards that cause similar problems.
